Notes: Setting chapter.

In the cold December night hardly anyone was roaming the street, an old woman was sitting down waiting for the next arriving bus, an homeless guy was trying to keep himself warm by rubbing his hands repeatedly up and down his arms, a teenage girl was returning home from her tutor session and Caroline Forbes was walking home from her job at the diner. Her day had been tiring and all she wanted was her bed.

Her days were always tiring during and after her day at the diner. She had to serve grumpy pensioners who complained about unnecessary happenings, whiny and bitchy teenagers and large groups of men who acted like a bunch of fucking bitches calling after the nearest whore. She was thankful for the job because she needed the money to pay for her apartment, for food and drinks and to pay for her phone so she could call Sarah.

Sarah was her younger sister who she had to leave behind after they had lost all of their money. Sarah was only 14 years old when she had gave away their savings, Caroline didn't blame her, and she couldn't blame her. Sarah didn't understand who and what those people did and why they did it. The people who had took the money off them were about to rape Sarah until Caroline arrived home and threw all their money that they had saved up for a better life at them so she could save her younger sister. Sarah still felt guilty to this day that she had wrecked things.

Sarah was living with her adoptive parents whilst Caroline tried to earn the money back that they lost. It was a hard life to live when all you earned was $16 an hour; Caroline received tips off her most valued customers for her cheerful and bubbly attitude. It helped a lot and she appreciated all the tips she received from everyone who gave them to her.

Caroline wondered what her parents would think of her, having to work hard daily so she could save her sister and herself. She knew they would be thankful that Sarah was safe and would most probably be proud of her for protecting her sister, for trying her hardest to get her sister back.

Up to now she had a little over $300 saved up and it wasn't nearly enough. Caroline was trying to find another job. She had always wanted to have a singing career, she knew that would pour the money into her bank and she could have her sister back. The only problem was every record label she had sent her songs into had rejected her, telling her she wasn't good enough for worldwide success. That's was when she found the diner, they were looking for a waitress, a good waitress and Caroline was desperate for money. Besides this was New York, there's nothing better than being in New York working in a diner, ha, right.

Caroline was so lost in thought that she didn't realise that someone was rounding the corner until she bumped into him, knocking her back to reality instantly. She looked up and blushed at the man who was staring down at her with an unreadable expression on his face. His really handsome face, he had cerulean colour eyes, nose and cheek bones that just screamed that he was fun man and scuff that Caroline would love to feel against her cheeks. Caroline realised she was staring creepily at him. Caroline felt her neck and cheeks go bright red and looked down at her feet.

"I'm sorry. I wasn't looking were I was going." She said after a moment of complete silence between herself and the man.

"That's alright, love. My name is Klaus." Klaus said and watched as her face lifted up to look at him; the blush still remaining on her porcelain skin. Klaus would normally be mad at someone who bumped into him and checked him out. But the mystery girl was a different story. He felt like he couldn't be mad at her and he didn't even know her. With her blonde tresses and blue eyes and most importantly those red, kissable lips, it was obvious she was a beauty. Who also seemed to have a good heart, or maybe that was because everyone else had a nicer heart that his own. Klaus refused to believe that he had a heart, numerous times had occurred were his dad had beaten him and told him he was worthless and that he didn't deserve love was engraved in Klaus' mind.

His hand shot out so she could shake his hand.

"I'm Caroline." She said, placing her hand in his; shaking his hand.

Caroline's face went blank as she got hit with a memory of the past.

Caroline was only 17 at the time and she was holding a scared 12 year old Sarah in her arms, rocking the sobbing girl back and forth, trying not to cry herself as she watched the horrific scene in front of her. A group of men in black suits and matching black masks on were destroying her house and tying Caroline's and Sarah's parents up, their faces and bodies already beaten up, the blood pouring from their received beatings, their mother was crying and her father was trying to stay strong, the key word being trying. He was failing in the department, and soon enough, he too, was crying, not as bad as his wife and his daughters but he was still afraid of losing his wife and his kids. He was supposed to protect them but now he couldn't and it would have to be Caroline who protected Sarah and herself now. He knew his princess could do it. She had a strong heart and would always protect her sister.

Their parents were looking at Caroline begging her to look after Sarah and herself, to protect Sarah and to never trust anyone that she met and most importantly don't do deals when concerning money.

"Say goodbye kids. Your parents have met their end." Caroline heard a sick voice say to herself and Sarah before she heard two bangs and a girly screech coming from Sarah.

When the group of men were leaving Caroline saw the initial's 'MM' wrote on his briefcase.

The person who had 'MM' on his case turned around and looked at her; eyes shining with evilness, his lips twisted into a cruel smirk. He held up his fingers in a gun shape before he left; the morning light starting to show as the time neared 4am.

Caroline's heart was beating wildly in her chest. She knew that smirk and gun sign was not good. It meant trouble. Trouble she didn't want.

Caroline held a crying Sarah tightly in her arms, the tears falling down her own cheeks. Caroline would let herself cry now and be strong and tough later.

The sound of sirens entered her ears and the tears fell harder.

"I'm sorry Klaus. I have to go." Caroline whispered out, trying hard not to cry in front of a complete stranger. She stepped past him and rubbed furiously at her eyes. She shouldn't and wouldn't trust Klaus. She didn't know why she got that flashback to that night but she intended to find our exactly why Klaus triggered it.

"Caroline, wait!" Klaus said, his hand grabbing on to her wrist, not tight enough to keep her there if she didn't want to stay and chat with him.

"What Klaus?" She asked, her voice loud and strong, exactly like her father taught her how to speak.

"How about we have dinner tomorrow night?" He asked and Caroline froze as she thought over her options. She could say yes and get answers or tell him to leave her alone and stop being a creep. As appealing as the second option sounded. She wanted, needed, no she caved the answers.

"Fine. Where and when?" Caroline asked him.

"Allow me to pick you up." He said and she laughed. "Right, like that's going to happen."

"Meet me here tomorrow at 7:15." She said to him before shrugging her arm out of his hold, walking away from him.

Klaus pulled out his phone and typed in the number, only having to wait a few seconds before the person answered.

"I found her." Klaus said into the phone.

Caroline arrived back to her apartment and climbed up to the second floor, opening her apartment door and closing it behind her, locking the bolts in place. She had to protect herself right now. She didn't trust Klaus at all. He had a smirk that screamed trouble and eyes that held a dark past.

Caroline walked over to the counter, her jacket getting slid off her shoulders and onto the counter. She opened up one of the locked cabinets and pulled out her gun. The gun her father had given her the night he died. Caroline walked into her bedroom and closed the curtains over and picked up her suitcase, throwing it onto the bed. Opening the suitcase and pulling out a change of clothes. She put on a pair of black leather pants and a matching black tank top, and a pair of black boats. She pulled on a black beanie hat for the finishing touch.

She walked fast through the apartment and climbed out through the fire escape, sliding gracefully down the steps, her gun rested perfectly in her boot.

Caroline only hoped that tonight went to plan. She needed to do this and she didn't care on what rules she was breaking.
