Pictures of kittens are apparently great FF inspiration...

"Oh, Elphie!" cried the blonde, flopping down on her pink, frilly bed in absolute distress. "How am I ever to survive? This is the most horrendous thing of all time!"

Elphaba glanced up from her book with a raised eyebrow. "Did your makeup run again?"

"Elphaba Thropp, do not tease me so. This is a real emergency. I don't know what I am ever going to do!"

The green girl went back to reading.

"Do you not want to hear what the problem is?"

"You want to tell me and I have no objection to hearing it."

Galinda sighed dramatically. "Fiyero is engaged, Elphie. Engaged. Can you believe it?"

Elphaba started and stared at her friend in shock. "Are you sure? Whoever to?"

"That is the very thing. I don't know. I just saw him a few minutes ago, walking out of this dorm building. He had a ring on and when I asked him why, he said he was engaged! I was so surprised that I could couldn't even congratulate him. But, who in Oz is it to? Do you think somebody in our wing?"

Her friend shook her head, feeling bad for the blonde and desperately trying to ignore the feelings stirred up by the revelation. "Galinda, I know this must be awful for you, him being your ex-boyfriend and all. But it has been over a year since you two broke up. You know a lot can happen to both parties in that time."

"Oh, I'm not upset about that!" Galinda smiled. "No, I am very much over him, Avaric is my newest, dearest love. I'm just mad that Fiyero had a girlfriend for a year that he didn't tell me about, especially if I might know her. How can you date somebody for a whole twelve months and keep it a secret from me?"

"I'm sure it would be the challenge of a lifetime," said Elphaba. "But, you really are alright?"

"Perfectly fine, just burning in curiosity over this mystery girl. In fact, I'm going over to Fiyero's room right now to demand an explanation! He has to tell me or else I might die!"

With that, Galinda jumped up and quickly left the room, driven by a new determination to uncover new gossip. The green girl was left to shake her head fondly at her friend and return to her book, pausing only briefly to admire the silver band put on her finger only a half-hour before.

Galinda was going to kill her when she found out.

I feel like there is an excellent backstory to this fic. Maybe I should write it...

Bonus points for those who caught the Pride and Prejudice reference!
