Sam blinked lazily, the sunlight pouring in through the thin openings of the blinds temporarily leaving him without his sight. Rubbing his eyes, he tried to figure out where he was and why the bed he was in was so comfortable. He made a move to sit up, but it registered that there was a head resting on his arm—Kurt's, to be exact.
And then he remembered.
For Sam's birthday, Kurt surprised him with tickets to a show of one of Sam's favorite bands—A Day To Remember. They weren't exactly Kurt's style, but he had grown to like the band from hearing so much of them from Sam. The show was so much better than they anticipated—it was at a small venue, but the energy was incredible and the band was awesome and it was just so amazing to yelling the words back at the band, bonding with not only Kurt, but everybody else in that room. No one said anything to Kurt, either—granted, he wasn't in any extravagant outfits or anything relatively flamboyant (he actually had on a pair of skinnies, and one of Sam's ADTR shirts), but people seem to just know in Lima—and he seemed like he was comfortable at the show. The car ride back was filled with listening to ADTR CDs, and talking about how incredible the show was, before the two of them almost immediately crashed in Kurt's bed.
Sam wouldn't have expected Kurt to be a cuddler, but he didn't mind Kurt's head resting on his bicep or his arm loosely on Sam's torso. He found that he actually liked it, waking up to somebody—or rather, waking up to Kurt.
He looked over at Kurt, at his face and how peaceful he looks as his shoulders move slightly as he breathes deeply, and he remembers how full of energy Kurt was the previous night—how Kurt actually moshed (and held up his own), how he jumped, how he was singing (or yelling, as everybody was doing) the lyrics back to the band. (And Sam remembers how, when they played Have Faith In Me, he and Kurt looked at each other during the line "I said I'd never let you go, and I never did," and how badly Sam wanted to forget where there were and what they were doing and just kiss him.)
His eyes drifted to Kurt's back, where the design on the back of the shirt was, and where it read "My friends come first, that's the bottom line." Sam smiled, realizing the truth in that statement.
To him, Kurt was first. He always was.
