It Takes Two
Chapter 1 – A Matter of Chance
Disclaimer: I am not the BBC and don't own any of these fantastic characters.
(A/N – This story focuses on the characters of Vastra and Jenny from the Series 6 mid-season fianle A Good Man Goes to War, so this fic may eventually contain spoilers for said episode. Also, this chapter is much shorter than future chapters, so don't worry, they'll get longer! Enjoy ;D)
Vastra awoke to the blazing, deafening screech of a warning klaxon, the harsh sound ripping through her long-dormant eardrums and breathing life into her stiff, newly-awakened limbs. Blinking, her eyes flitted dozily from side to side for a few seconds, before focusing on the translucent door in front of her. She saw shadows moving about beyond, and with a hiss she flexed her reptilian muscles and surged forward, her scaly skin coming into contact with the door of her hibernation capsule forcefully. However, to her surprise, it did not slide aside as she had expected it to, but held firm, her body coming into a harsh and painful contact with the organic, plastic-like material.
The Silurian recovered and gave an angry hiss, composing herself before beginning a fresh assault on the door. This attempt heralded no better results and the first, and Vastra expressed her frustration by pounding her already sore fists against the cell door.
"Get me OUT of here!" she demanded, with venom in her voice (in more ways than one). There was no response; just the continuing blare of the warning siren and the sound of scuffling feet as shadows continued to pass by her door. A sense of annoyance even stronger than before overtook Vastra as she overheard one of her sister's confiding in another with a low hiss as they passed;
"The apes. They are attacking. We are under assault from those puny-minded creatures!"
The outrage in the Silurian's voice was undeniable, but it was nothing compared to the frustration that was coursing through Vastra's cold-blooded veins. Typical; the apes were invading - which promised a feast for her kind – and she was the one that had to get stuck in a malfunctioning hibernation cell. Just brilliant.
The footsteps outside seemed to have slowed, but the klaxon was proclaiming the imminent danger as loudly as ever. Vastra had never felt so helpless, and she had only been awake for... oh, three minutes at the most? She had a bitter feeling that this was not going to be a good day for her.
She wasn't wrong. But she also had no idea of the stroke of luck that had befallen her. She had no idea how lucky she was when the earth-shattering explosion tore through the base of the small Silurian tribe a few moments later, rocking the foundations of their hastily-built underground city (built after believing that the end was nigh so many years ago...), bringing gigantic rocks crashing down from the makeshift ceiling of earth and dirt that sealed them off from the human world above. She had no idea how lucky she was when the blast threw her off of her feet, sending her sprawling in the small, confined space of her cell and smashing the back of her head against a jagged rock protruding from the wall. And she had no idea how lucky she was, as she lost consciousness, that she was the one and only Silurian to survive the excavation process of an innocent group of underground railway tunnel workers as they blasted their way through the depths of London, forging a new path that would be used for several hundreds of years in the future to aid the very apes that Vastra despised...
Maybe it was just one of those days.
OK, so I hope that you enjoyed the first chapter! I know that it's a little short but don't worry; they'll get longer. We'll see some of Jenny's POV next chapter - a plan to do a little bit of backstory for both of the characters before they become the team we know and love... but that'll only be for a while. Tha main focus of the fic I think will be to show some of Vastra & Jenny's early adventures and how the relationship between them developed, so I won't ramble on about the past for too long ;)
I just loved the characters of Vastra and Jenny when they were introduced, and am an avid supporter of the idea for them to have their own spin-off... but for now, we'll just have to settle for fanfiction! Plus the excellent Grimlight, which is a genius fan-creation if I ever saw one. The reception they've receieved is amazing! Anyway, I hope that you enjoyed the first chapter. Please review - or Madame Vastra attacks you with her katana LOL ;D (Only kidding, but reviews are still much appreciated)
