The stars sparkled in the inky black sky, and darkness had crept out and covered the streets below. However, Wendy wasn't tired. she sat by the window, while her brothers slept peacefully in their beds. Nana had come out of her kennel to keep Wendy company, but she too was asleep at the girls feet.
Wendy looked out at the sky, but her eyes were glued onto one particular star. She thought back to the night she had escaped out this window, and had flown to that star like there was no tomorrow. She also thought back to him. Peter. The boy that had come to retrieve his shadow, and had ended up leaving with three more children.
She missed him. She remembered the first time she had seen him. She tore her eyes from the star to the corner where he had been sitting down, trying to scrub his shadow on using only a bar of soap. Wendy sighed. When she had first returned back home, she had been convinced that he would visit her every night. To hear her stories. But she never saw him.
It was getting late. She might as well get some sleep. She stood up and winced in pain. Her legs had fallen asleep during the long period of time she had been by the window. She stumbled towards her bed in the darkness, and slipped under the blankets. She pulled it up around her head, so only her eyes showed. The sounds of night were blocked out. All she could hear was silence.
Just as she was about to drift off, something shone in front of her face. Her eyes snapped open, but nothing was there. Was her mind playing tricks on her. She unwillingly closed her eyes again, to feel the light shine on her again. She opened one a eye and crack, and tried her hardest not to gasp. She recognized what was making the light in front of her. Tinkerbell. She sat on the edge of her bed, looking closely at Wendy. She obviously didn't know that the girl was awake. Wendy moved her arm, and Tinkerbell vanished under her bed. "Tinkerbell wait!" She called out and froze as Michael shifted in his bed. She allowed herself to breathe when Michael didn't move again for a few moments. She swiftly moved out of her bed and across the carpet to the window.
"Peter?" she whispered.
She nearly laughed in delight when a teenage boy suddenly appeared in front of her. his auburn hair was a mess, there was mud on his face, but other than that he hadn't changed a bit. A smile spread across both their faces and Peter stepped down into the room. "Hiya Wendy." he greeted her. "Hello Peter." she replied. "It's good to see you. It feels like yesterday when I saw you last." Peter turned to her. "It was yesterday.....wasn't it?" he asked, confused. Wendy looked down uncomfortably and tugged at her blue night gown. "It's been a while. 6 months actually."
"Is that a long time?"
Wendy looked up and nodded. She had seen Peter in many different emotions. Happy; determined; teasing; Anger. But never had she seen him sad. "Gosh Wendy." he said quietly. "If I had known it's been awhile, I would have come sooner." Wendy smiled. Everything was clear now. He hadn't forgotten.
"It's okay Peter." A noise was heard from the hallway and both faces jerked to the door. Footsteps could be heard. "Go!" Wendy whispered and gently pushed him towards the window. he obeyed and leapt out. He hovered and turned back to her. "I'll come back." he looked deeply into her eyes. "I promise." Wendy nodded, showing she understood. She closed her eyes as he gently rubbed his nose against hers affectionately and in one second flat she was under the blanket in her bed. The door opened a creek and Wendy squeezed her eyes shut. The door was shut a few seconds later, and soon Wendy was asleep, memories of Neverland running through her head.
