I – Remembered by What, by Whom

Deep within the forest, beyond anyone's sight, there is a place that everyone has forgotten. That is, those who ever knew anything of it at all. Among the crumbling ruins, there is a yard still pressed flat with the memory of dancing feet. What walls still stand are covered in fading drawings of joyful faces, too weathered to be recognized by anything but their unnaturally wide smiles.

In a portion of the building that remains mostly intact, the halls seem to ring with long-dissipated laughter. You, who have stumbled upon this place, if you listen hard enough, in the perfect stillness of the shadowed rooms, you might find a trace of song still drifting through the stale and dusty air.

There, can you hear it? Listen closely.

Kagome, kagome,

Kago no naka no tori wa,

Itsu itsu deyaru,

Yoake no ban ni.

Tsuru to kame ga subetta,

Ushiwo no shoumen dare?

As you listen, the sound begins to grow, until it is more than merely an echo of the past, but something closer. Do not turn away and flee. They will soon be upon you, the shadows of forgotten memories, forever waiting, forever wandering. Dance with them, if you please, and learn from them what the whispers of this forsaken place truly mean. Now, listen.

Circling, circling,

Bird who is trapped inside his cage…

When oh when will you come out?

In the evening of the dawn,

"Crane" and "Turtle" both slipped and fell…

Who is it behind you now?
