Here's something I thought of when the internet was out.
New Responsibility
"What do you mean by "leaving", exactly?"
Chad Dickson looked at his desk. "I turn thirteen tomorrow and I need somebody to take over as Soopreme Leaduh for me. I'm asking you to fill that position, Numbuh 362."
Rachel just sat there with her mouth open. She wanted to say something, but words were flying all over the place in her head.
At last she said, "I never really thought about you turning thirteen, sir."
Chad smiled. "I thought the same thing when I took over from Numbuh 100. It's a sad day when the Soopreme Leaduh gets decommissioned."
"It must be," said Rachel, nodding. Of course, she didn't know for sure. She had joined the Kids Next Door just after Chad had taken over.
"So will you accept my offer?" Chad asked.
"Of course I will," Rachel replied. "It's an honour."
"Great," said Chad, sounding relieved. "But I have something else to tell you."
Rachel raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"
Chad looked at the door to make sure it was firmly shut before turning back to Rachel.
"Do I have your word that you will keep this a secret?" he questioned urgently.
"Yes…" Rachel answered, completely confused.
"Good," said Chad. "Tomorrow I will start acting as your enemy. I want you to know that you will try and stop me at all costs, and don't stop when I get angry at you for doing so. Please keep in mind that my allegiance is, and always will be, to the Kids Next Door."
Even though she was even more confused than before, Rachel said, "Yes, sir. I'll try my very best."
Chad grinned and saluted. "You're dismissed, Numbuh 362."
Rachel saluted and left the room, feeling the burden of even more responsibility on her shoulders.
