"...Begging you to sit for a portrait on the wall
To hang in the dark of some parliamentary hall..."

Sirius Black and James Potter are riding the Hogwarts Express for the first time ever. It's here, before they are even aware of the houses that either of them should end up in, that they begin their relentless feud with Severus Snape, whom it seems instinctual to hate. Two decades later Ron Weasley and Harry Potter are riding the Hogwarts Express for the first time ever. It is here that they begin their relentless feud with Draco Malfoy, whom it seems purely instinctual to hate.

James Potter is eleven years old when he enters Dumbledore's office for the first time. He's in big trouble for hexing a Slytherin girl and making her eyebrows grow to absurd lengths. As he waits for Dumbledore to arrive, he watches as the portrait of the previous headmaster on the wall behind the desk scrutenizes him disapprovingly. It's nearly twenty-six years later when the portrait behind the headmaster's desk depicts Dumbledore himself. Harry Potter is in this office now, and he's in for far worse trouble than a detention.

It's fifth year, and James is sitting beneath the beech tree with Remus, Sirius, and Peter. He can't help but look over at the girls at the water's edge, ruffling his hair skillfully as he does so. Twenty years later a similarly thin and springy red-head is sitting beneath the same beech tree with his two friends. He's just won his first Quidditch match, and he can't help but look over at the girls by the water's edge.

During their sixth year, James, Sirius, Remus and Peter are huddled over the Marauder's map, making their way across the entrance hall underneath the invisibility cloak. Twenty years later, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are huddled over the Marauders map, under the very same invisibility cloak, walking swiftly across the very same, hard, stone-flagon floor.

It's their seventh year, and Remus pulls out the Marauder's map for the very last time as he, James, Sirius and Peter peer over it cautiously outside of the Whomping Willow. It's about sixteen years later when Remus retrieves that very same map out of Harry's sweatshirt pocket and realizes that Peter is alive, Sirius is innocent, and the person responsible for James's murder had been hiding in the form of a common garden rat all along.

They're seventeen, they're of age, and they're leaving Hogwarts. The Marauders no longer need the Marauder's map, and they leave it in the hands of a few first years out to cause some trouble. When Filch confiscates it that very evening, he doesn't realize that it will only be twelve years before two very mischievous twins nick it from his office and use it so frequently and deviously that they live up to it's namesake.

It seems like they've been through everything together; it's hard to believe they only really started hanging out last year. Yet it seems as if he's been waiting for it forever when James finally leans in to kiss Lily that evening in Gryffindor tower. It's not surprising when the scene looks vaguely familiar nineteen years later as a boy with characteristically messy, black hair and glasses swoops in on his red-headed love, after what seems like an eternity of waiting. They had only really started hanging out the year earlier too. Then, small details like that aren't so shocking, really. All moments are happening all the time. Still, sometimes it's worth it to take the time out to appreciate them.
