Did It Not Matter? ~A soldier's sadness~

You walk down a cold, dark street.
The bodies of you enemies and civilians who got in your way
are strewn all over.

Did it not matter who you killed?
Did it not matter who died?
Did it not matter whose blood stained your hands?
Or did it?

The stench of the beginning of decay fills the air.
You are oblivious to all as you search the mess.
Clothes, pieces of value, and pieces of memories lay in your lonely path.

Did it not matter what you felt?
Did it not matter what your heart said?
Did it not matter to you?
Or did it?

You continue the long walk to nowhere.
The dying flower clutched tightly in your hand.
The dog rests silently against your chest.
Never to breathe, bark, or play again in the sun.

Torn up feelings of confusion, hurt, loss, pain, and
that new feeling of love tear into your mind, body, and soul.
The pretty little girl who shared a moment in her short life with you.
Did she mean more to you than you thought?
She is gone now, into a world of never dying flowers.

But you are to stay on this harsh world, to dream and relive the short
amount of happiness and love you felt.
You are neither a "perfect soldier" or a "human", you are yourself.
You determine your life, you are not a machine. You are you.

Did it not matter?
Did it not matter of the size of your destruction?
Did it not matter of the large amount of remorse you felt?
Did it not matter?
Or did it?
