Vincent was a very unhappy 11 year old. As long as he could remember he had waited for his letter. The letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The letters always come on a witch or wizard's eleventh birthday but his birthday had come and gone, and no letter. He was going to have to face the truth, he was a Squib.
In the next room Verity thought about her son. He was such a bright boy and he reminded her of her boyfriend, Vincent's father Brent Summers, nearly every day. She knew Vinny was sad but she had suspected that he was a squib for quite some time. Magical tendencies usually showed up long before the age of 11 when the Hogwarts letters arrived and Vinny hadn't had any that she knew about. "Vinny!" she called. "Come in here for a minute." "Coming Mom!" he answered and headed for the living room.
When he was sitting across from her she began . "I know you are upset Vinny but there is no shame in being a squib. It's a different world now. No one will try to make you go live with muggles like they used to. It's a brave new world for the magical community. Tolerance of other's differences is normal now. Your Father fought and died in the battle of Hogwarts to help make things this way. I was working in Weasley's Wizard Wheezes at the time and pregnant with you. When your father heard they were fighting Voldemort at Hogwarts he flew there immediately to help. We were engaged and he couldn't wait to be a Daddy. I asked him not to go but he said "What kind of Father will I be if I am not willing to fight for a better world. I want our child to grow up free." I was devastated when I heard he died but I was so proud of him. I want you to know, squib or wizard, I am proud of you and I know your Father would be too." Vincent was quiet for a moment but when he spoke she could hear his conviction. "I will go to Hogwarts. There has to be a way. I'll find it." and then he added quietly as he left the room "I will.".
After he walked out she smiled thinking of the time that "Summers", as he was called, had tried to enter the Tri-Wizard Tournament, despite being underage, (he had only been 16) and ended up with a long white beard. Summers had always been the type of guy who didn't let rules stand in his way and from all appearances Vincent was following in his footsteps.
