Sam hobbled into Deeks hospital room with his crutches since Sam had heard that Deeks had woken up a few hours ago. He was surprised Kensi wasn't in the room when he entered. "Hey," he said.
"Hi," Deeks replied and he sat up in the bed.
"Where's Kensi?" he asked. He knew it wouldn't even have taken a stick of dynamite to get her out of Deeks's hospital room.
"Callen came by and nagged her into getting something to eat other than hospital food they've been giving me," Deeks told him. "It wasn't easy especially since I had to nudge her along too. Though I think he and I both knew that she was hovering, and she and I both needed a break from said hovering."
Sam sat on the vacant seat in the room. The same seat he knew that Kensi had claimed since she was allowed admittance to the room last night. "Michelle told me she went to pieces when she found out that we had dropped out of contact," Sam told me.
"Sam, if you're going to apologize to me for getting the brunt of the torture and for all the crap you gave me yesterday before all this happened," Deeks said, "you can just save it. I was backing up a partner, a teammate, and a friend. Anyone else would have done the same thing."
"We're okay because Michelle," Sam told him.
"I know," Deeks confirmed. "Callen gave me the highlights when I had asked him."
"But you didn't give up Michelle, Deeks," Sam said.
"I could have," Deeks said. "We both know it, but we both know the minute I had we both would be dead."
"And you would have broken your promise to Kensi," Sam replied.
"I know," Deeks said. "And we both know I could have if they hadn't gotten to us in time. I'm glad I didn't."
"You know you have no idea what it means for me that you didn't give up Michelle," Sam said. "No idea."
Deeks smiled at him. "Oh, I think I do," he disagreed. "If I was in your position, I think I have a very good idea what it would mean to me."
Just then the doctor came in and eyed Sam. "Why aren't you in your room?" he asked.
"Just needed to talk to my friend," Sam said. "I was leaving anyway. Thank you, Deeks."
"Anytime, Sam," Deeks said. "Anytime."
