Blood Ties – No Turning Back
Disclaimer: don't own the characters though I'd love to!
Warning: you're entering unbetaed territory.
Set whenever you fancy. Just a little angsty thing I came up to one day. My apologies to Mike's fans: I kind of lashed out at him but then, he had it coming ;)
"What business did you have to call the police department – again – to ask for a favor, Vicki?" He is yelling. He's just stormed in her office, not even bothering to say hello. "Now Kate is yet again cranky because of you!" he adds, pointing accusingly at her.
"Oh, I get it! You're not furious because I called, you're furious because precious little Kate is unhappy about the whole situation, right?" She's started yelling too. "I'm sick and tired of you chiding me about this and that and whatnot. I can't even text you when I want to, for God's sake! And all this because she might learn about it and be unhappy?
You're pitiful, Mike. Life is here and now. We don't have forty lifetimes ahead of us! We've got one! Stop worrying about what might happen or what people might say. Seize the day. Do as your heart tells you. Believe me. Following his advice is much safer than listening to your mind.
Stop thinking! Act, feel! Because if you don't, one day soon, all you'll be left with will be regrets. Precious Kate might not even be there to comfort you. I know it's not what we're told when we grow up but it damn sure is the right thing to do with your life while you still have it. Take the road less traveled by. I don't know about you, but survival is not an option for me, only living my life to the full is. No hypocrisy, no maybes, no hesitations, no backtracking."
She's rendered him speechless. She's always been outspoken but she's never talked to him like this before. He realizes he's gone too far and she's not who he's always supposed her to be. He's always thought she could be reasonable. He now sees he's been sadly mistaken. He's lost her and knowing Vicki, that means forever. He looks at her and can see it in her gaze. She's staring at him as if he's already left, as if he doesn't exist anymore in her reality. No other feeling for him is left in her but sheer indifference. He lifts his hands in surrender and leaves without a word.
Next morning he can't help texting her to see how she's doing. His phone buzzes in the middle of a work conference. Kate glares at him. He flips his phone open under the table and reads the message anyway: "FYI, not reading your messages anymore." For her, he's as good as dead.
