Life

A girl through the window, a bargain made, alliances formed and emotional ties. That's all it was, and yet it had meant so much.

Some moments were blurry, but all in all, the life they had made together, first as friends, then, as something else had been incredible. Some parts were hard, a vast number so near impossible, that he had contemplated just giving up. But he could never have done that, and looking back, he wouldn't change a thing.

It was hard for others in the crowd, friends and family teary eyed and whispery, but in a way he could see that they were happy for her, and they honoured her in their sorrow. A little girl, with straight dark hair and dramatic dark eyes, ran forward and threw a single white lily to the water. She whispered something secret, and he did not dare intrude.

He let his eyes wander around the landscape; it was a perfect spot. The lake and the cabin where they had spent so much time, was in all the glory of late spring, the lake a true dark blue, the trees still and silent.

She had so loved it here, away from the hardships of their life. She would drop the hard-protected shield she usually wore as security, and become... just a girl. A beautiful, strong, loving girl, who, as the years passed, became a women before his very eyes.

With one last prayer to the waters, it was over, and people around him were moving in the direction of their homes. He would wait. As the last person left, the little girl looking intently in his direction before being called away, he turned to the west and smiled. She walked serenely towards him, hands outstretched, delight crackling in her beautiful dark eyes.

When she reached him, he pulled her towards him and enveloped her in his strong arms, placing a possessive kiss on her forehead. She grinned up at him and pushed his glasses over the bridge of his nose.

"Been waiting long?"

He faked nonchalance, "Not too bad, I could've waited a while longer."

She smirked, "I know you, and I know you've been just dying to hold me in your arms again and all that bit."

He leaned down and gently kissed her. "Maybe that's true, but we'll just keep that between you and me."

She grinned again, and he drank in the sight of her warmth and beauty.

"Maybe it's time we should be making tracks huh?"

He nodded, "You're right,"

"Always am."

He pulled her towards him again, "I've missed you Max."

She tightened her grip on him; "I've missed you too, so much."

Like that, arms tight around each other, they walked away, the setting sun illuminating their path.
