Christmas.
The greatest holiday of the year. This is the time of the year where friends enjoyed each others company, parents showered their children with gifts, and distant relatives sent fruitcake and sweaters.
Naruto heard about what his former classmates got for Christmas, and how much fun they had.
Naruto heard about how much Tenten loved the kunai set she got from her father.
Naruto heard about how Lee cried when Gai gave him a new green spandex suit with Lee's name on the tag.
Naruto heard about the new headband Neji got from Hinata. And how he looked happy (sort-of) when he got it.
Naruto heard about how indifferent Shikamaru looked when he got a new heavy-duty blanket for his daily cloud-watching. And how glad Ino looked when it seemed like Shikamaru smirked after he opened the big box the blanket was in.
Naruto heard about how happy Sakura was when she found out that Sasuke had wrote something for her before he betrayed the village. It was a little note found in a drawer in his abandoned apartment. The note was addressed to her, and it had his name at the bottom. But Sakura thought the important part was that the letter was for her, not how it said that Sasuke thought she should take a brick and hit herself in the face with it.
But Naruto never told anyone what he got for Christmas, or what he did. It wasn't the greatest story in Konoha anyway. Who would want to hear about him sitting on his futon in his apartment all day, looking out of his bedroom window?
Naruto heard all about how great his friend's Christmas' were. It was always like that. Every year he'll sit around the house until December 26, and then hear about how Sakura almost got Sasuke to look at her this one time.
But Naruto will never tell anyone that he never got anything for Christmas.
Well, that's not entirely true. The last two years, Naruto was on that training trip with the Super Pervert, and we all could probably guess what Jiraiya tried to buy for him.
But Naruto would never touch a brothel with a stick. So needless to say, he never actually received those presents.
But receiving gifts is no big deal to Naruto now. He was going to be Hokage one day. Everything that he goes through, he reasoned, will only make him stronger.
