Honestly, it was all Sam could do not to laugh.

Ainsley had flour in her hair, dough on her shirt, and a fire extinguisher in her hands. If she hadn't looked about 10 seconds from tears, Sam would have fallen out laughing. The stench from the smoke still lingered in the air, and the ghosts of tongue-lashings pasts rang in his ears, so with every ounce of self-control he had, Sam stepped forward and took the extinguisher from her hands before wrapping his arms around her.

She relaxed into him and as the tears started, he couldn't hold the laughter in any longer.

"I really don't think now is when you want to start laughing!"

"Oh c'mon, you have to admit, it's a little funny." He smiled and wiped the tears from her eyes.

She sighed heavily and stepped backwards to lean on the counter. "I do not in fact find anything funny about the fact that I will now never be able to be a classroom mom." Ainsley sighed again, and Sam watched her absentmindedly bring a hand to the bump hidden just beneath her clothes.

Sam stepped forward and cupped her cheek to bring her eyes back to his. "Honey, you were never going to be a homeroom mom."

"Oh really? And what evidence do you have to support that?"

"Well, most United States Senators don't make good homeroom mom candidates because of the traveling and somewhat unpredictable schedule. That and let's face it, you basically suck at party planning. In fact, you hate party planning. That's why you have two campaign managers, so you don't have to plan anything."

She narrowed her eyes at him; a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he shook his head. "You're gonna do fine. I promise."

Ainsley cocked her head to one side, staring at him with her most serious face. "Pinky promise?" she asked and brought her fist up to chest level, pinky sticking out.

He grinned, and mimicked her, wrapping his pinky around hers. "Pinky promise."
