a/n: At your fancy, dearest. And to your pleasure, nothing less.

Matt 27:23

"It's not fair! It's not fair, it's not! It's not...why?! Why would they do this?!"

He had yet to process the logistics.

"After all you've done! After every sacrifice that you've made! You put your life on the line for these selfish...fucks!"

She was breathing heavily, green eyes shaking with intense anger. Her makeup trailed down her cheeks, the remnants of nigh endless tears from the days before.

He was heavy, listless. The hot dog topped with chili sat in front of him on the table, smoking hot.

It was all cardboard, but he would eat it soon. For her sake.

"Fuck them! All of them! Fuck everything!"

He reached through the cold feeling in his chest and stood up.

"All of these fucking selfish humans can just...just...!"

He pulled her close to him and her voice was throttled along with her anger. The light streamed through the window as she took hold of him.

The tears came down, warm and painfully heavy. He braced her body against his as she shook, losing control.

It turned into a frustrated, heartfelt wail.

He fed her warmth.

He was still listless. Still lost.

"Why don't you come with me?"

He can see her tail swish back and forth, like it has a life of its own. Or...no. It's an extension of her thoughts. Another way of gesturing.

Blaze looked at Sonic as he sat down on the park bench. He looked heavy.

Lost.

"Why not come with me? To my world, Sonic. Become a king. Be the hero you deserve to be."

She walks towards him.

"I won't betray you. Not like they have."

He says nothing, his gaze pointed towards the earth.

She feels a tinge of anger, of heat flowing through her body.

"In my world...I will restore you," she says firmly. Her warm hands reach for his cheeks and they cup them confidently.

"I will give you the love that these humans have denied you. And even more, still. Know your place, hero. Claim it."

The warmth grows slowly.

She parts her lips and closes her eyes.

He stares into her as she kisses him and feels a wealth of heat being poured into his body.

She pulls away and lets out a breath.

It's hot.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I hate them more than I love you."

"Maria asked a lot of me. Of beings like us."

The club is empty. He sits at a table across from the black hedgehog and white bat. He is unamused. She is perturbed.

"That's all that your heroism is worth, hon. That's all it ever was worth," she says bitterly.

She looks at the blue hedgehog.

He is heavy.

"Sonic, sweetie. Don't dwell on this."

He looks up at her wearily.

"You're not their keeper."

His eyes drift to Shadow, and he nods. She knocks back a drink, shaking her head.

"Selfish fucks. All of 'em."

"I know it wasn't your fault."

The woman with the blonde hair stands next to him. Behind her is the angry, wrathful crowd.

"I know you did all that you could. For her."

He walks past her, still heavy. Still lost.

"Sonic-"

"I'm sorry."

"I told you-"

"No. I'm sorry. He died. He's dead."

"I...?"

"He died along with her. That's the risk. The price I pay." He leaves the roses on the sidewalk. Beside the memorial.

The green eyes are void of light. She shivers and cries. Reaches out to him.

"She's looking forward to seeing you again. One day. She wanted you to be happy."

"I didn't mean to make them hate you!" she wails. "Please! I'm sorry!"

He gave her a solemn smile before running away. She falls to her knees, sobbing.

"Upon...all of us..."

She raises her head and screams.

"Upon us all! And our children!"

The crowd for the first time, was silent.

"He died a thousand deaths. Their hands will never be clean."

Shadow mused at the happenings on the news feed. He grunted once.

"Wash as much as you like. It will do you no good. It is as you said...Maria."
