The Gifts of a Mother

Lily Potter stood over the crib of a sleeping baby. The room was dark, and the pale yellow walls looked brown in the waning moonlight. The baby girl in the crib made a cooing sound, and Lily looked down. The little girl had thick brown hair for being only a year old, but she had few other distinguishing characteristics. "So you'll be Harry's wife." The words were quiet, and a bit sorrowful.

Lily knew she wouldn't be present at the wedding, or anything else. Voldemort had taken that away from her. She had been dead only a few minutes, but before she and James' spirits were taken to Heaven, where they could watch over their loved ones, they had been given a small amount of time on Earth. This time was special. They could give gifts to a person of their choice. Not presents, but traits. It reminded Lily a bit of the muggle story of the fairies in Sleeping Beauty. They couldn't change a person's personality, but they could bring out certain aspects of it.

James was with Harry, saying goodbye, and, Lily thought with a smile, giving him a good dose of mischief. She had said her good-byes to her son though. She had done that when she saved his life. Now she was here ensuring his future. A future she wouldn't be there for.

The child she stood over would meet Harry when they were both eleven. They would fall in love and marry. She had been given this knowledge.

"My baby is going to grow up without his mother, so you'll have to love him enough for the both of us. Stick by him, and care for him, and protect him, okay?"

She listed three traits, and gave a wave of her wand for each. "Be smart, and be loyal and brave." She stopped, and thought for a second, then with another wave of her wand, "He'll be like his father, so you better be adventurous too."

"I know you'll be all these things anyway, but this is just an extra dose. There might be days that you just don't feel like you ever want to see him again, and this is for those. Try to make sure he doesn't break the rules TOO much. I think you'll keep him out of danger, or at least help him when he's in it.." She heaved a sigh, "Thank you for taking care of my son. I know you will, and you'll do it well. I know you'll be there for him, even if I'm not. Thank you." She bent and kissed the baby's forehead before she vanished from the room.

A/N- I realize this one is kind of different and not veyr good. I couldn't get the idea out of my head. The baby is supposed to be Hermione, but I didn't name her for everyone (the wrong people out there : ) ) who think that Hermione and Harry won't get together. I know GoF book didn't support my position, but I will be an H/H shipper until one of them is married or engaged to someone else. Please review and thanks for reading my lowly piece. Now go read something by Katie Bell or Blaise, or any of those other wonderful authors who's shoes I'm not fit to shine.
