To a Mechwarrior 3rd Edition gamemaster I know:
SMG chatters endlessly across the roll of dice
Every second it spits out a round or three and my friend
Says its got 5 5d6 or something crazy like that or it's a shotgun
With extra range and extra power and I say why
Do your guys all have such incredible weaponry they pack
Eight different pistols and enough ammunition to supply our
Guys in Afghanistan for a week not to mention daishos- katana and wakazashi
Knives sniper rifles you want a weapon that can use up all its ammo in one turn
Pick a standard auto rifle because each weapon can fire twice in one turn
And it bursts 15 maximum per action and it carries thirty rounds so
Theres your weapon as long as you don't move while firing
The armors the same way I have no idea how
These guys can run in all this gear its crazy but its less out of scale than the weapons they carry
Why do they always have to have such an incredible advantage the
Game I ran we had more fun when our guys nearly got
Shot to pieces by a pair of weak-ass snipers hidden in the
Horrible jungle they were picking through you cant always
Have the advantage its boring you were more proud of how you used the auto grenade launcher than your fancy bonus weapons which did slaughter the enemy but
It was like shooting fish in a barrel don't you realize its more fun to
Think and shoot your way out of a bad situation and accomplish the impossible
Than to actually be the impossible and stomp on all the bad guys like
Some immortal warrior character or Arnold Schwarzenneggar but remember he
Always fights armies and even then has to use his head to survive
Your guys use their guns and I know you have more fun when I make the game
Hard but not impossible the most fun part of the game is not when you
Do eighty damage for a fatal wound with some massive super weapon its when you manage to take out the
Machine gun nest in the middle of a complex using your grenade launcher
And all of a sudden gunfire erupts everywhere and you
Weren't expecting it and its then that you realize all the ammo in the bunker cooked off
And I completely messed with your head
Then we go up and down mountains and one character fails a stealth check and
Whoa the trail we just dove off of gets ripped apart by portable machine gun fire from the guy forty meters away on a switchback and you had the most massive surprise
Played on you you see
It's not about the weapons.
It's about the characters.
It has to be hard.
You have to always beat the odds.
And its fun to outthink the bad guys with remote detonated explosives but
Give the anti matter bombs a rest because you risk annihilating the
Universe every time you use one and you waste all this technology on something
That's going to blow up and don't you think that the cost
Might be a little prohibitive
Use a satchel charge or a block of C8 and don't go around creating redundant skills that
Your guys will rarely use skills are generalizations so you can apply them to more than one area
Once all you rpg guys have that figured out because although I can make the game fun I don't have the time you do your guys will have more fun and you wont
Be bored out of your skull asking them how many shots they want to burst fire
