Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters of Smallville. Some dialogue is from the Pilot ep.

I got the ide for this while listening to This is Your Life by Switchfoot. I have a little of the lyrics here. Thanks, Snarky for betaing.

Lex drove the country roads at a speed normal to him. His sleek sports car flying around the curves like a hot knife through butter. The locals quickly learned they had a city-slicker that didn't understand that country roads weren't race tracks.

He was used to living in big cities, but thanks to his father he was now in the middle of nowhere. He thought to himself how the town was aptly named "Smallville" as he shifted gears. He took his eyes off the road momentarily as he reached down to answer his ringing cell phone.

Time seemed to slow to a crawl as he brought his eyes back to the road. He was rapidly approaching a ball of wire that had appeared directly in his path. He instantly dropped his phone while simultaneously yanking the steering wheel and trying to brake and shift gears. The car careened violently to the right and into the bridge railing.

Lex only had time for one thought before the impact and the cold water turned his world into darkness. "I think I just killed someone."

Lex opened his eyes completely disoriented. He couldn't see anything. He felt like he numb like he was in a void. Then, slowly he could see a light approaching as if watching a movie, images began flashing before him. The images were of him partying and other forms of mischief.

He then heard a voice, it wasn't a booming voice, but a soft one that he thought might just be in his head. "This is your life. Are you who you want to be? This is your life. Is it everything you want to be?"

Lex closed his eyes to the barrage of images. He felt like he was flying as he looked down and saw all the farms below. He had a sense that this was a new beginning.

Lex then felt himself coughing furiously and rolled over onto his side and opened his eyes. After he was finished spitting out water he turned and looked up to see a very relieved looking teenager sitting down beside him. Lex just looked at him for a moment before finally speaking, "I thought I hit you."

"If you had …" his rescuer panted. "I'd be… I'd be dead." They both turned and looked at the gaping hole in the guard rail.

Three years later…

Lex stood with a key in his hand. This key was one of a kind, it unlocked a room that only he had access to. It went to the room he now stood outside of, that held different oddities that he had acquired during his stay in Smallville. It had all started with that day on the bridge, he had become obsessed with these anomalies. He had become friends with his rescuer. Probably the only friend I've ever had that hasn't wanted something in return, Lex thought to himself bitterly. If only his intense curiosity had not taken over and hired a private investigator look into a multitude of strange occurences. Could he walk away now?

He looked down at the key again and that is when the words came back to him. "This is your life. Are you who you want to be?

Lex quietly put the key back into his pocket and walked away leaving the door shut.
