Hello all of you! This story is influenced by Book 1 of the actual show, with a little Korrasami twist of course ;). Because obviously, you know, they had their eyes on each other from the start. *flips hair*
I'm probably gonna make this a two- or three-part story, so keep an eye out!
I don't own Legend of Korra or its characters.
The Avatar wrenched off her helmet as soon as she stepped into the waiting area, hair sticking to the sides of her face. This match had been particularly draining, physically. She was about to walk over to Mako, to congratulate him on his performance in the match, when Asami suddenly opened the door and strode over to the fire bender.
Damn that high and mighty rich girl, who does she think she is?
"Mako, you were exceptional out there!" the industrialist proclaimed, giving her boyfriend a light peck on his cheek.
" 'Oh, Mako, you were just so terrific, let's just ignore how awesome Korra and Bolin were and waltz off together…' " Korra muttered to herself, snapping to attention when she realized that her company was staring at her.
"Er, uh, yeah. Good job, you guys," she hastily spoke up, shifting her gaze away. She began to put her gear back up in her locker.
Bolin made his way over to Korra, resting his arm against the wall next to her.
"So… You were definitely badass out there. Wanna go get some food with me to celebrate?" Bolin suggested, leaning in towards the girl.
Before Korra could offer a response, she heard someone's voice, butting its way into a conversation that really did not concern—
"Hey, why don't we all go out to eat together?" Asami proposed, stepping away from Mako.
"I agree with the lady! That would definitely work, it'd be like a double date, ya know…" Bolin started, but trailed off upon looking at the questioning expression the Avatar was giving him. "A d-double date, in a…friendly way, yeah. Because you, and I, we're just, uh, friends. …Yep."
Korra sighed inwardly. I wouldn't exactly leap at the opportunity to have dinner with Asami. Although Mako will be there too, and it would be nice for Bolin if I went…
There was a distinct rumble that stemmed from Korra's stomach.
"…Haha yup, I'm starved. Let's go!" she exclaimed, earning a cheerful hoot from Bolin.
After changing back into their normal clothes, the party headed over to Narook's for dinner, despite Asami insisting that she wouldn't mind treating everyone to a more upscale eatery. Once inside the Noodlery, they were seated at a table off to the side—Korra next to Bolin and Asami by Mako.
The mere presence of Asami dismayed Korra, much less the fact that the heiress was sitting next to Mako and, "Whoops, you got a little something by your mouth. Let me wipe that for you Mako, teehee…"
Ugh, that woman.
Yes, Korra would admit, maybe she was a bit jealous of Asami; despite this, Korra couldn't help but hold an amount of genuine respect and admiration for her. Though their connection was definitely still offbeat.
Definitely offbeat.
Asami sent a glance in Korra's direction, causing the latter to hurriedly slurp up the noodles that she had at the end of her chopsticks and nearly choke. The engineer smirked.
Korra didn't really notice many other instances of Asami doting on Mako, or vice versa, for the rest of dinner. Thank the spirits. In fact, Korra was quite satisfied by the time they left the restaurant; the food was delicious, and she enjoyed simply hanging out with her friends. Who knows when Amon would dictate the loss of that free time?
They set out for the Sato mansion for additional leisure, as per Asami's invitation. The bending brothers were all for it, but of course, it was difficult for Korra to acquiesce.
I totally don't have to accompany them. I mean, I have other things that I really could be doing, but… Korra stared at Mako carrying a conversation with Asami in the front seat of the Satomobile. She sighed. Might as well.
Upon pulling up to the monumental home, the three guests let their jaws go slack in amazement. If it looked so huge and fancy on the outside, then the inside must be beyond extravagant!
"Wow. Asami, you have got one. Hell. Of a place. Lemme just say that," Bolin remarked, jumping out of the vehicle and rushing to the front door.
"Bolin!" Mako called after the earth bender. He groaned in irritation and got out of the car. "But he is, indeed, right in saying so." He smiled, wrapping an arm around Asami when she came to him.
"Thanks," the pale woman responded. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Korra stealing glimpses of them. Shouldn't she have just stepped away by now?
"Look, Mako. Go ahead inside with your brother. Korra and I will catch up in a bit," Asami separated herself from her boyfriend and turned towards the girl in question, who appeared downright mystified.
The fire bender, though slightly puzzled, simply nodded and followed Bolin through the front doors of the mansion, where a butler welcomed the two.
"Is there something you needed?" Korra began.
Asami leaned against the hood of the Satomobile. "Korra, I just want to put something out there… Why do you hate me?"
Isn't it obvious? "Um, I don't hate you, Asami…"
The heiress stepped closer to the other woman. "I'm getting this vibe that I've done something to…unsettle you." She paused. "…And I'm guessing it's because of Mako, huh?"
Korra felt her body stiffen. "What! Ha, um, you're just making stuff up."
"Hey, it's okay. I really didn't mean to come in between you two—"
"Asami." Now Korra was the one to move closer. "…You know what? I'll be honest here," she started, hesitating. She rested a hand on the taller woman's shoulder.
Wait, what am I doing? Seriously, where am I going with this…? She took a breath.
"Truthfully, I'm not a, uh, big fan of you and Mako…" Korra sat back against the side of the car. "I don't know, things are kind of confusing between him and I right now."
The blue-clad woman lifted her head up, gazing sincerely into Asami's eyes. "But I don't hate you. From what I know of you, you're a wonderful person—you work hard, you're smart, p-pretty." Korra's face reddened slightly at the admission. "Mako is…lucky."
Korra's words left Asami without any of her own. I really didn't know what I was expecting her to say, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't that. Rather straightforward of her, the latter thought.
Silence remained between the two. Asami shifted even closer to Korra's side, stretching an arm out and laying a hand on the cool metal of the automobile. The Avatar's breathing slowed as she stared at the woman beside her.
"I'm really glad you feel that way. I don't want you to hate me," Asami whispered. Somehow, she found herself drawing even nearer to Korra, who stood frozen.
Spirits! W-What's happening here? Korra's brain exploded in uncertainty, yet she felt a sense of thrill running through her.
Their faces remained mere inches apart. "Because, you know, I've heard you're quite the wonderful person yourself," the industrialist murmured softly, breath ghosting over Korra's lips.
The Avatar felt her eyes automatically begin to slide shut, when a voice cried out to them from the mansion.
"Come on, you guys! The party's waiting for you!" Bolin shouted, seemingly oblivious to the situation in front of him.
Korra immediately jerked back, her complexion turning a bold shade of red. Asami quickly angled herself to Bolin with a sheepish look on her face.
"Yeah, we'll be right there," she responded.
Bolin grinned and returned inside. Asami made a motion to follow him after briefly glancing back at her female companion.
Korra lightly bit her lip and suddenly reached out to grab Asami's wrist, tugging on her arm to decrease the distance between them. They found silence again, scrutinizing the other's eyes and expression for a moment.
An abrupt prickling sensation ran up Asami's arm. The industrialist barely had time to register the feeling before noticing Korra's eyes glow. Asami was absolutely fettered by the Avatar's radiating stare—her body was immobile but her soul… What was going on? This wandering, this throbbing, this…freedom and power.
The moment was short-lived, yet Asami remained bewitched by the experience even after Korra returned to normal and let go of her wrist.
"S-Sorry!" Korra stuttered, face flushing even more. "I don't know… Um, I'm just gonna, you know, head inside." She walked away briskly without giving Asami another glance.
"Korra…!" Asami attempted to call out, extending an arm, but she found herself taken aback by the blaze that emanated from her fingertips.
F-Fire? What the hell!
Asami could only gawk at her hand. Was that truly fire that just materialized from her fingers? The woman cautiously, yet firmly, struck her fist out, and there it was again—the streaking eruption of flames.
This is impossible… I don't bend. I'm literally unable to whip up fire with my mind on some whim.
It spawned a disarray of fascination, bewilderment, and worry within Asami's mind. Whatever this was, Korra likely had something to do with it. Asami knew that she would have to confront the Avatar; whether or not she was actually the cause of this, she at least had to know how it happened.
She smirked to herself. Then again, it's Korra we're talking about here. Mako has mentioned that she can be a little…unenlightened.
Asami shook her head and started walking towards the entrance to her home. The butler directed her to the pool area, where the three visitors were waiting. Mako and Bolin were already in the water, racing from one side to the other, and Korra was sitting on the edge with only her feet in the pool. By the animated look on her face, she seemed to have taken her mind off of the situation that had occurred outside, focusing on the antics of the bending brothers.
Apparently, nobody there had yet noticed that Asami had arrived, so the heiress slipped away to change into her swimsuit. The conversation she knew she would have to have with Korra nagged at the forefront of her mind, but…
No, it was surely not a good time to bring that up. Even if she could get the Avatar alone, it would still be detrimental to everyone's recreation to bring up such a topic.
Like, a non-bender suddenly able to bend fire is some pretty heavy stuff.
As such, Asami joined her company without incidence. She could tell that Korra was acting a bit unusual, but that was something that would have to be addressed later.
And they did have fun. Asami didn't actively swim, still full from dinner, but it was unexpectedly comfortable sitting with Korra and watching the two guys enjoy the pool.
But damn, was there ever still that underlying tension between the ladies.
At the end of the night, Asami offered to have Mako and Bolin driven back to their place, but Korra insisted on riding Naga back with them. Mako gave Asami a goodbye hug, and his brother excitedly did the same. They strode over to Naga, waiting for the polar bear dog's owner.
"Hey, Korra…" Asami tried to speak, but she faltered.
"L-look, I don't know what happened earlier, but there is nothing going on between us," the shorter woman retorted, and swiftly made her way over to Naga. She, followed by Mako and Bolin, got on the animal's back, and they promptly rode away.
"Going on between us?" What is she even…
Asami took a second to think about what Korra had said, pink blooming across her face.
She chuckled and shook her head. Okay, she definitely has that messed up. But maybe she doesn't know about…
The engineer lifted her hand, producing a small ball of fire. She studied it briefly before diminishing it and clenching her hand into a fist, looking up in the direction that the party had left in. She had to talk to Korra about this as soon as possible.
This is my first Legend of Korra fic, so I apologize if there's any out-of-characterness or whatever. But I hope you enjoyed! :3
