Nancy tried not to think about it but it seemed impossible to do so

Nancy tried not to think about it but it seemed impossible to do so. She had to accept it and move on. She couldn't spend all of her life crying just because her boyfriend, who she thought to be her true love, broke up with her. She'd never thought that she'd see him again but today when she was buying a gift for her dad, she spotted those excessively familiar brown hair and that pair of warm eyes.

Ned Nickerson had been her boyfriend for years, until he broke up with her last month. He said that he couldn't bear the fact that she gave priority to her cases over him. Nancy tried to forget everything but wounds in the heart do not get healed that easily. But at least she had started to go out and mix up with her friends again. Her father, Carson Drew, their housekeeper, Hannah Gruen and Nancy's best friends, Bess Marvin and George Fayne had helped her a lot in this concern.

But what did this guy want now- crashing into her life like that after a month?

'He ain't exactly crashing into my life; he couldn't possibly have known I'd be here. Probably he too was just doing some shopping,' Nancy tried to convince herself.

And then she saw that handsome face again. Ned was standing in the parking lot next to her blue convertible. When she saw him, she just couldn't help wishing that this wasn't just a coincidence. No, this couldn't be a coincidence; his car wasn't in sight nearby. Nancy's heart skipped a beat as he smiled weakly at her.

"Hi," she said as she unlocked her car and put her shopping bags inside.

"Hi, how are you Nan?"

Hell, you break my heart, let me rot and after a month you come and ask me how I am?

"Just fine, how about you?"

"I'm OK. Hey Nancy, I-er-wanted to talk to you for sometime"

"I'm sorry but I'm going somewhere with Bess and I gotcha hurry."

"Nan, you may pretend to be whatever you wish when you deal with your suspects, but when it comes to your personal life, you are a novice at lying. Hey, please. I won't take much of your time. "

"OK"

"Great! There's a nice little coffee shop round the corner. What do you say?"

"Sounds fine to me." She smiled though her heart was full of pain.

Why the hell does he want to talk now? Didn't he himself say that evening that he was just tired of this relationship? Or does he think that the pain he gave me that time wasn't enough?

But, though she doubted Ned's intentions, Nancy herself couldn't deny the fact that she still loved him. All the way to the coffee shop, both of them walked silently. But on the inside, Nancy was raging. She entered the place with Ned, the battle still on inside her.

As they took a table, Ned ordered two cappuccinos.

"So, what do you want to talk about?" Nancy tried hard to keep her tone polite but be sure that she didn't sound helpless or desperate.

"Nan, I'm sorry."

"Sorry for?"

"For all that I said to you that evening. Baby, I can't live without you. I don't mind if your work is more important to you. But to me you are the most important thing in the world. I realised this when I had to stay away from you all this time. Please forgive me Nan, Please, give me one more chance-"

"Ned, even I'm sorry. I love you but maybe I was just taking you and your love for granted. Believe me, I love you more than anything else in the world Ned. I just don't wanna be without you."

The pain, the suffering, the fear, everything vanished away. She bent forward as Ned moved close to her, cupped her face in his hands and brought his lips to touch hers.

Now she at last felt that divine kiss she had been longing for since four weeks.
