It was through J'onn that she learned of what she had suspected - that the bright, gleaming dot of green light that had pierced the dark wood of the coffin had been Lantern's; it was by Wally's reluctant admission that it was Lantern who had been most - emotional? distraught? frustrated? - over the immovable barrier closeting her mind from them. Superman had merely smiled his gentle, godlike smile at her confused expression and said, absently, something about meeting a reporter friend of his.
A part of her felt strange about the subtle revelation; she was not, however, truly surprised. Unsure, perhaps, and awkward, but not surprised, and, really, she did not feel half as odd about it as she thought.
She and Lantern had long been entangled in a cautious, friendly dance with one another, not willing, either one, to cross the carefully scratched boundary that rested between professional companionship and personal involvement. A coffee shared between the two, a preference to fight alongside one another, tendencies to brush hands or share wry jokes and looks at Wally's expense: small, testing things to probe at that line, but never to cross it.
She had wondered, of course, what might change between them were John or she to make a move toward romance, if either one of them dared to verbally acknowledge what they had mentally realized, discussed silently with hand gestures and quick glances. The one time they had talked to one another about what 'they' were, in the quiet aftermath of the Great War, both had agreed to wait, see what might naturally occur, see if there was another for him, another for her, and how they could then avoid awkward team relations.
Months had passed since that bout of time travel, and they were still alone, together. That pinpoint of green light that she recalled, flickering in her mind as she sobbed for help - needed utterly to be freed from the confines of her claustrophobic nightmare - and latched desperately onto the first face in her mind as salvation, that light was a glimmer of something, a dream within a nightmare; and she knew they were on the edge of change, she and the omnipotent, flawed Green Lantern.
When she feared death, feared the loss of freedom and flight, and the delicate brush of wind rushing fiercely past her, it was John Stewart's face that filled her mind.

Notes: Hawkgirl's official 'normal' name for Justice League is listed as Shayera Hol; while Hol is the last name of Hawkman (whom she married in the comics, and took the name Hol thereafter), no other evidence has been provided in the series that she is married or romantically entangled with Hawkman or anyone other than G-L. ;]
Disclaimer: I own none of the characters, situations, etc., of Justice League, but this vignette is most assuredly mine.
