One day, in late December 2003, Freeport Middle School was holding a winter carnival. 8th grader Sarah Phillips was looking around at all the carnival games. "Hi, Sarah," a voice from behind her said. Sarah turned around and looked behind her. It was Nathan Hale, the boy in her class who was accused for cheating off of Sarah's history exam. "Nathan, what are you doing here?" Sarah asked in a shocked tone of voice. "Would you like to share some hot chocolate with me?" Nathan offered. "No, thank you," Sarah stated. Another boy in Sarah's class, Benedict Arnold, was drinking a glass of beer. "Benedict, why are you drinking beer?" Sarah asked. "You're only 14 years old." "Well, it's a carnival, Sarah," Benedict explained. He then walked away. "Don't listen to him, Sarah," Nathan told her. "I'm sure you would much rather drink hot chocolate." "Today, I would rather drink a milkshake," Sarah stated. "It's too warm outside for hot chocolate." "Wasn't it great when we had a white Christmas last year, Sarah?" "It was, Nathan," Sarah said, "but I don't know if we will have snow for Christmas this year. We may or may not have that this year." Sarah then ordered a peppermint milkshake to share with Nathan Hale. "That's nice of you to share with me, Sarah," Nathan remarked. "Thanks," Sarah replied. "I can share this with you, but not my schoolwork." Sarah felt that Nathan should be suspended for trying to cheat off of Sarah's exam, as well as Benedict Arnold for drinking beer. Middle school was hard for Sarah nowadays, as well as the winter season. This winter carnival would take her mind off of things for a little while before heading home to spend Christmas with her mom, stepdad, and her 2 stepbrothers, James and Henri!
