A few days after Gordon set off for London to see his brother, he came back to the Island, where his family, plus Thomas and Toby were waiting for him. They were delighted, and asked him how Flying Scotsman was doing. He told them that his brother was more or less alright, and the pair had a chance to catch up whilst he was away.

"I also have an important announcement!" Gordon declared. "As our dear friend Toby just so happens to be related to your mother, and he did help look after you all, I have decided that Toby will now be an official uncle of this family!"

Everyone cheered upon hearing this, and Toby smiled a broad smile.

"Thank you Gordon!" He said happily. "I am very pleased to be in the family."

The engines cheered again and blew their whistles to show their happiness at the acceptance of the proposal.

...

Later, Gordon had finished telling Toby all about the things he needed to do as a new uncle. All he could get out of it was that he was to be a second father figure to the engines, but also try to be more liberal (within reason) when he was with them.

This news unsettled him.

"Oh dear, I do hope I can do this right." He muttered as he rang his bell and set off to collect Henrietta.

...

The next day, Thomas and Percy were very concerned about Toby, as he seemed to be nervous about something. He was alright around the coaches, but he didn't as comfortable near the engines; Percy in particular.

"I think we should find out what's wrong." Thomas decided. "It's not fair seeing him like this."

"I agree." Percy said.

So they went to talk to their friend.

Toby, what's the matter?" Percy asked.

"Yes you seem nervous about something." His blue friend added.

The old tram looked like he was about to say he was fine, but hesitated, and looked at his friends.

"It's okay- you can tell us." Thomas chuffed kindly.

"It's just... it's just that I feel worried that I won't manage to be a good uncle." Toby sighed.

"Well, just act as you do now!" Percy peeped.

"But as what?" Toby asked.

The two tank engines looked at one another, and grinned.

"Well, as a friend." They said simply and earnestly.
