Jim was four and playing in the park because he'd rather be at the park then at home with his mother and her new husband. Jim heard crying and looked around for the source of the noise. The carriage was all alone but when Jim looked around he saw its owner near another child. Jim walked over to the crying baby. Jim rocked the carriage to calm the baby; the child stopped crying and smiled.

Jim was seven and he was in the hospital again, this time with a few cracked ribs. He was board so he wondered around the hospital; he ended up at the maternity ward. Jim entered through the door to the nursery near silently. A baby began to cry; Jim looked around and spotted a bottle. He picked up the baby and the bottle and began to feed the baby, rocking it gently. The child quieted, Jim smiled.

Jim was working real hard to keep the children mostly ignorant of what was going on. He had two helpers, a Vulcan, the children called 'Professor', a Tarsusan they called the Protector and Jim was the provider. They became like a family. The Vulcan eventually was called 'Father' the Tarsusan became 'Daddy' and Jim was called 'Mom' because he was the one to tuck the children in at night, to tell them stories, and to give what Jim thought was false hope of rescue but Jim took care of them like they were his. Jim was there taking care of the children for five years, from age ten to fifteen.

Jim was seventeen and needed money so he used his experience to get a baby sitting job, he didn't think it would turn out to be a Nanny gig. Jim took care of that child for seven months before he snapped at the child's mother to actually spend time with her child. Jim left but when he checked back to the child was calling his mother 'Mommy' again instead of her given name, Jim smiled.

Jim was twenty five and had just been made the Enterprise captain. Bones' ex-wife had given him his daughter for a brief visit but then Bones had to go to a patient, then a surgery, so Jim was left alone with a young Joanna. Bones took a long time to come back but Jim didn't mind and neither did Joanna but when the ex-wife came to pike up the child, who was asleep, Jim managed to convince her to give Bones a week longer and to not interrupt their time. Bones was overjoyed and forgot to ask Jim how he'd convinced Joanna's mother to give him more time.

Jim didn't care what people said, he didn't care that he himself felt he was so screwed up that he should never have a child, much less raise one, yet he couldn't help but love the baby that had been placed in his arms, he'd thought that after the nine months of carrying the child he would be able to hand the child over to the couple he hadn't told he was considering them to be his child's parents, but he couldn't, couldn't give away the little boy that Spock had given him by accident. Jim reached for the bottle that was on the bedside table and began to feed the baby, humming softly.
