And Still They Kept Fighting

They had been fighting for over twenty years. Over twenty years of constantly struggling, of risking their lives every night, of never knowing if this might be their last day on earth. Over twenty years of fearing the night, fearing the darkness and what it brings. And still they kept fighting.

They had lost friends and family over the years. It was unavoidable after all. You can't save everyone. It's impossible. They all knew it, but it was still hard. Holding a loved one in your arms, seeing the light in their eyes fade. But the innocents, those turned because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, those who were killed by their hand, they were the worst. To take someone's life… But they had to do it. In a way it made them stronger. Strengthening their resolve. But a part of them died every time it happened. And still they kept fighting.

This kind of thing gets to you no matter how strong you are, and believe me, they were strong. After a few years it takes it's toll on you mind. Not all of them were completely sane the last few years. The things they had seen, the things they had done… no one should have to live with that. And still they kept fighting.

One of them even had a child. It wasn't planed, it just happened. But it was a blessing. She was a beautiful little girl. She truly was. Their ray of sunshine in a dark world. When they lost her father, the child kept her mother from joining him. They all helped raise her, protecting her from all harm. Protecting her from the world. But it wasn't enough. She too was taken by the darkness. They lost her mother to insanity that day. And still they kept fighting.

They were never the same after that. Maybe that was why it happened. It was such a small mistake. Anyone could have done it. But it wasn't just anyone, it was them. The responsibility was theirs. It shouldn't have been, but it was. It was them against an enemy that couldn't be beaten, but they stood tall, fighting, not only for themselves, but for everything. If only more people had fought! If only…But they were alone this time, the only time that really mattered.

At least they were all together in the end.

The End
