This story is about Ted Mosby's first date with the mother of his children. We have been waiting patiently for many seasons for this moment, and this is my projection of what it might be like.
Ted was nervous. He had been on so many failed first dates before, but he had a feeling this was the big one. He anxiously looked in the mirror one more time and wondered if he should have gotten that haircut, if his shirt made him look fat, and if his breath was fresh and minty.
Marshall was waiting for Ted outside of his bathroom. He could sense Ted's excitement and it made him nervous as well. Was the finally the woman that his best buddy would marry? How much longer would Ted have to wait to find true love?
Ted had met Violet the week before at Robin and Barney's wedding. She was a musician in the wedding band, and he had instantly fallen for her beautiful voice and her killer guitar moves. Ted had anticipated the worst for that night, after all he had just allowed himself to get over Robin, but he left feeling optimistic and excited to see her again. Violet loved sensitive men and found Ted irresistible after he had cried giving his best man's speech. Ted had a reputation for turning on the waterworks at weddings, and this occasion was no exception.
After a couple of appletinis, Ted got up the courage to ask Violet for her number. He felt more nervous than usual, maybe she really was the one. They had agreed on dinner and drinks, but Ted had a surprise in mind. Ted was an architect, and he wanted to take his date to the top of the new GNB building that he had designed for a romantic view of the city.
It was 6:30; and Ted knew that waiting around much longer would make him late. After a few reassuring words from Marshall, he hopped on the F train and tried to calm his nerves. Little did he know that this night would change his life forever.
When he arrived Violet was waiting on the street outside. She was stunning in a tight red dress and black high-heeled boots. Ted couldn't take his eyes off of her. They awkwardly exchanged hellos and headed inside for dinner.
You could ask Ted about the food he ate that night, but he wouldn't remember. He was so absorbed in his conversation that he hardly ate a thing. Yet they stayed for appetizers, dinner, dessert, and coffee before they were anywhere near the ready to leave. He had never met a girl that was so full of life. Violet was a woman with a real artistic flair, she loved to create as much as Ted loved to design. She valued family and desperately wanted to start a family of her own.
At 11 o'clock they were asked to leave. It was closing time and they had finished their meal hours ago. Violet was planning on taking a cab home after their date, but she didn't feel ready to leave just yet. Ted told her he had a surprise. He had experienced her art at the wedding last weekend, and now he wanted to show her his work. They walked over to the new GNB building holding hands. It was a warm and starry night, the kind where you could just sit outside for hours, telling stories and sipping on cold drinks.
The elevator ride up was long and silent. Ted felt an electric connection between them for all 75 floors. The doors opened on to a beautiful garden terrace; and as they gazed at the stars Ted felt like he was finally starting a new chapter in his life. Ted was so sick of being the third wheel, and was ready for a shot at the real thing. He looked down at Violet and started to make a lame comment about the weather, but he never got that far, because his mouth was intercepted by a life-changing, earth-shattering kiss.
To be continued…
