Disclaimer: I own nothing but the plot.
The Sickness
Draco Malfoy lived an opulant life. Of this there was no doubt, given the enormity of the manor in which he lived and the quality of the things he owned. He came from wealth and lavished in it. From his finely tailored robes down to his exquisitely made boots, he radiated aristocratic elegance. He was the epitimy of the child born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and in his case, he quite literally was. His parents had lavished him with attention and expensive gifts when he was a child. Yet these gifts of wealth over time became devoid of the warmth that once accompanied them. As he grew, Draco learned slowly of the sickness his family suffered. The sickness of greed corrupted all that Draco knew and loved, and it pervaded every aspect of his life. His father's greed was for power, his mother's for wealth, and both craved the status each could bring. He never knew that wealth could bring such sickness upon his family, never dreamt his father could bring them to such ruin. The lust for power and status drove him to the Dark Lord, and the horrors that creature reaped upon the Malfoy clan was the reward. Now that the war was over, the cost of their sickness still pervaded his life. Their reputation was tarnished beyond repair. The status his parents craved like addicts to their greed was left in tattered ruins, yet still the sickness pervaded, despite the loss, the poverty. His father, malnourished and broken in Azkaban, still hounded him about the "way of the Malfoys", despite the fact that he was in prison for life. His mother, left to dredge in poverty, the Malfoy fortune stripped from her, coiffed her hair, donned her fancy gowns, and put on the mask of Lady Malfoy for all to see. Heaven forbid the true disease within be discovered. She was all but penniless, but still the greed, the sickness, it corrupted her. Yet he, the Malfoy heir, survived those three evils. From greed he was freed, no desire for wealth and status drove him now. From poverty he rose, working hard to pull his father's company from it's failures and build it into something new, free of the evils of dark magic, something of his own. Finally, from the sickness he had freed himself. No longer would greed corrupt him, nor poverty restrain him, and the legacy of the Malfoy clan was now in his hands.
