Eight-year-old Sammy knew he was asking for it. Dean had said, "Stay quiet and keep your head down. Don't open the door for anyone. I'm going for supplies, I'll be back soon." He had nodded and they'd gone over the secret knock, but Sam knew better. He had heard the older boy picking on Dean when he'd come to pick Sam up from school. Unintentionally hidden behind a dumpster, he heard the boy call Dean stupid.
Dean's voice, sharp as a whip crack, "I'll show you stupid. Railroad tracks, six o'clock tonight."
Sam hated that people thought Dean was stupid. He knew Dean was smarter than he let on. He had asked his brother about it once, and had seen the gears turning in Dean's head. Debating on being honest, or being a smartass. Sam had been shocked when Dean answered the question.
"Dad said not to draw attention to ourselves. People see me and they don't expect much. If I surprise them by doing more, they'll remember it. You, though, you little egghead," Dean had head-locked him and ruffled his hair, "they expect more from you, and you don't disappoint."
Sam sneaked through the woods to the tracks. They'd played there a few days before and Dean had pointed something out to Sam that might help. At the time, it was just a novelty. Now, as Dean squared off against the larger boy, Sam took out his slingshot and a stone, taking aim at the large wasp nest. The rock took the nest dead center. Within seconds, the wasps wound up like an angry buzz saw. Dean held his ground until the other boy screamed and ran for cover. Despite the fresh stings, Dean was laughing too hard to be mad when Sam appeared from his hiding spot.
