'How is it that people can spend their whole lives trying to prove it is their only life?'

Jesus is the Answer.

His heart ached as he heard the words "there is no God!" He had given them everything. He had given them life, shaping and moulding each of them to be unique, to be beautiful. He had not wanted things to be this way. He never had but it was all part of His plan. He knew that in the end it would be for the best.

He had given them free will, because he loved them and wanted more for them than just for them to be mindless robots. He wanted them to make that choice, to love Him back. Of course the evil one had turned them against Him. He had known that he would. He knew everything but still it pained Him.

Every time they hurt one another He felt pain. He could feel every aching heart and see invisible tears. Every time they cursed His name he felt pain and His heart in its entire infinite expanse would ache, as though they had stabbed it with their words.

Once He had gone among them. At first they had loved Him but then the evil one had turned their hearts from Him. He had felt all of the pain that they felt as the leather ripped at his skin and as the sharp nails had been thrust through His hands and His feet while they had stood by laughing. "Father forgive them, they know not what they do" he had said. Tears had rained down from His eyes, partly from the excruciating agony but most of all, from the emotional pain of knowing that His own children, that He had not done anything but loved had turned against Him. They were the ones doing this to Him.

And it still hurt Him now.

They liked to pretend that they could explain everything with science. He knew that was just their excuse though, for living as they willed, for blaming everything on 'animal instincts'. They were so much more than animals. He had granted them a soul and had lovingly made them. How could they demean themselves and Him in such a way?

Every now and then however, a little light would flicker as a single heart turned to Him, recognized him, loved him "I love you my Lord…please…help me!" and that single act of love had the power to smother a thousand painful curses.

His heart soared as he knew that one day, they could be with Him once more and everything would be perfect. They would sit at His feet and smile and love. That was what helped Him through the pain of their rejection.
