Lost Opportunities

I don't own the song "Someone to Watch Over Me" or the show "Upstairs, Downstairs".

She had seen many people fall in love during her time at 165 Eaton Place – Mrs. Bridges and Mr. Hudson, Sarah and Thomas, Daisy and Edward, Sarah and Captain James, Captain James and Mrs. Bellamy, Miss Elizabeth and Mr. Kirbridge, Lady Marjorie and Captain Hammond, Mr. Bellamy and his new wife... so much love. And love had passed her by.

It was her fault – she could have gone to Australia with Gregory. And then perhaps he wouldn't have died...

There's a saying old
Says that love is blind -
Still we're often told:
"Seek and ye shall find".
So I'm going to seek
A certain lad I've had in mind.

Gregory... she still remembered everything about him. He had loved her, and she had loved him, but she wasn't brave enough to leave all she knew to start a life with him. But she wanted to...

Looking everywhere,
Haven't found him yet;
He's the big affair I cannot forget.
Only man I ever think of with regret.
I'd like to add his initial to my monogram.
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb.

He would have taken care of her, would have been a good husband, but she didn't trust him enough to move across the world with him. She would have liked to have been his wife, would have liked to be Rose Wilmot, but no. She never was and never would be.

There's a somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that he
Turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me.

I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood.
I know I could always be good
To one who'll watch over me.

She longed for him even after all these years. Even after all these years she still loved him and missed him and wanted to be with him. But he was dead, dead and she had never had the chance to be Mrs. Wilmot; never had the chance to be a wife and mother. She never would.

Although he may not be the man some
Girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key.
Won't you tell him please to put on some speed -
Follow my lead -
Oh! How I need
Someone to watch over me.
Someone to watch over me.

He never was what most people would call handsome, but to her he was the most attractive man in the world. And he held her heart, even now – he was the only man to ever hold her heart. Yes, she had had a brief liaison with Thomas, Sarah's husband, but she'd never loved him the way she loved Gregory. And it was never anything serious.

But now Gregory was gone, as was Mrs. Bellamy, Captain James, Lady Marjorie... nothing was the same. Throughout the years, she had always had 165 Eaton Place, and now that was gone too.

There were so many lost opportunities lurking in the corners of this house. And she wished, wished with all her might, that she could go back in time and choose to go with Gregory.

But that would never, never happen.
