A Kind of Immortality

Will's mind wanders as he works, his hands with a life of their own as they carve finishing touches on the small piece of wood.

He wonders why he keeps making these figurines, trinkets with no real purpose. It's not to stave off boredom - life in a camp of outlaws doesn't get dull. He doesn't give them to his friends - what use would they be?

Perhaps, he muses, he does it because wood lasts. Life as an outlaw is volatile, unpredictable - every new day brings new dangers. But each new carving is another piece of evidence that Will Scarlett is alive and exists in the world - evidence that may last longer than he himself.

He blows the shavings away and inspects his creation. Satisfied, he reaches for the box where he keeps the rest and nestles the figure inside. As he stands and stretches, he thinks, I'm not a hero, but maybe I'll be remembered.
