Just a little story about Juliet's late night talk with her daughter. I borrowed some of the lyrics from the fabulous Taylor Swift song Never Grow up, and the first line of the story is a line from the wonderful Billy Joel song Lullaby. Enjoy!

"Someday your child may cry, but if you sing this lullaby, then in your heart there will always be a part of me."

Juliet's voice was soft and lilting as she paced around the room, her one year old daughter cradled in her arms. Her entire life, she'd wanted a family of her own, and now she finally had it.

Her daughter's room was painted a soft lavender with white trim, and the carpet underneath her feet was a perriwinkle blue. There were nursery rhyme characters on the walls, and glow in the dark stars were stuck to the ceiling. It was perfect for her little girl.

Molly's fingers were wrapped tightly around her mother's finger, and her dark eyelashes fluttered against perfect baby skin. Juliet watched her in awe, still so amazed that she had brought this little child into the world.

The entire house was quiet, with the exception of the sounds of their breathing.

Smiling, Juliet ran her fingertip over Molly's chubby baby cheek. Then she kissed her forehead softly.

Molly continued to sleep deeply, and after a few more minutes, Juliet laid her baby girl in her crib. Then she leaned over and tucked her in before turning on Molly's nightlight.

Your little hand's wrapped around my finger

And it's so quiet in the world tonight

Your little eyelids flutter cause you're dreaming

So I tuck you in, turn on your favorite night light

Turning away from the wall, Juliet leaned against the crib and watched her baby girl sleeping so innocently.

At only a year old, Molly's world was so simple, so innocent. Everything was funny to her, and she was fascinated by the world around her. She had nothing to regret. Nothing bad had ever touched her, and if Juliet could do anything about it, nothing would.

Juliet would give anything in the world if it meant her baby could stay this happy, this innocent. She would never have to be hurt or jaded, and she would never become cynical.

She could just be happy.

To you, everything is funny

You've got nothing to regret

I'd give all I have, honey

If you could stay like that

Juliet reached down and gently smoothed her hand over her daughter's soft blond curls.

"You don't have to grow up, you know that, sweetheart? You can stay this little for as long as you want." She smiled softly, her finger absently toying with an errant curl.

If only it was that simple. Right now, she could protect her daughter from the evils of the world. But as Molly grew older, Juliet knew she wouldn't be able to protect her from every scraped knee and broken heart.

She sighed quietly. "Try not to grow up, okay, Molly mine?" she whispered, reluctantly withdrawing her hand.

Molly sighed in her sleep, and Juliet kissed her tiny forehead. Then she backed away from her daughter's crib slowly.

"I love you, Molly."

She padded to the door, casting a look over her shoulder at her daughter's crib. Then she slipped out of Molly's nursery.

"Don't grow up, sweetheart."

Oh, darling, don't you ever grow up

Don't you ever grow up, just stay this little

Oh, darling, don't you ever grow up

Don't you ever grow up, it could stay this simple

I won't let nobody hurt you

Won't let no one break your heart

And no one will desert you

Just try to never grow up

The End!
