It was late, and Draco was annoyed. It had been a long day at the office and he had nothing at home to look forward too. He had thought when he left the ministry to open his own company that he was leaving all the politics behind him. He had been wrong. Though they weren't the same as they had been while working under someone else, politics is what makes the world spend around. And today he had to play a good game. He had finally closed the deal on a new contract that had taken him weeks to put together.
He had done it though because it was what kept his mind of his personal life and the things he couldn't manage to change no matter how hard he had tried. He thought sometimes bitterly work was all that he had left in his life to be proud of. He had built this company from the ground up by himself. It was this company that had restored the name Malfoy to good standings in their world. Which was something he never let his father forget.
Returning to his office from his finale meeting of the day he was brought up short by the person sitting in front of his desk "Granger," he said surprised closing the door behind him. He thought he had told Jackie no more meetings he was determined to live the office today at decent hour. Though he supposed he couldn't blame her for allowing Granger in. She had long since stopped going by Granger but he had never stopped using her maiden name, it was what he called her when he was annoyed with her.
"Draco," she said softly as he made his way around to the chair behind his desk.
"What brings you by," he was trying to keep his cool. It had been weeks since she had agreed to be in the same room as him.
"I wanted to see you," she said softly.
"Right, so you decided to stop by unannounced," he said bitingly. It had been a rough day and he wasn't sure he handle the mental strength for a war of words. The last time they had been in the same room things were said out of anger and hurt and he wasn't sure if they could ever take them back. The Door behind her opened suddenly revealing his assistant Jackie, who looked sheepish at the intrusion.
"Sorry Mr. Malfoy, I was just letting you know, the last of the owls have been sent. Is there anything else you need before I leave?" She asked. From the look on her face he knew she could feel the tension in the room.
"No, thank you," he nodded his head dismissing her.
"Goodnight Mr. Malfoy, Mrs. Malfoy," before closing the door behind her.
They were alone again. "Draco," she said softly. He didn't look at her, he found he was having a hard time keeping himself composed. The woman sitting in front of him his wife, but he was deathly afraid she was here to tell him she didn't want to be his wife anymore.
"Hermione why are you here," he said finding his voice.
"I have missed you," he closed his eyes at this. Oh how he had missed her. He missed her touch, and the aroma of flowers on spring day. He had missed being able to fall asleep holding her close to his body drifting off to sleep without a care in the world.
"I have missed you too," they were silent for what felt like an eternity but was probably no more than a few minutes.
"Draco I am pregnant," his eyes widen his eyes shot to her stomach that seemed to be just as flat as the last time he saw here. His heart sank, had she been with someone else. Was she really going to leave him.
"How far a long are you," he asked numb choking on the words.
"Seven months," she said softly. His looked up to her beautiful face where he could now see tears slowly flowing down her cheek. Seven months the baby was his. They had only been separated the last six months. "I found out a few weeks after you moved out,"
"You kicked me out," he corrected her. E
"I was thrilled, but cautious. I knew that if we lost this baby to, our marriage wouldn't survive . So I kept it to myself. I have just come from the healers, and she said that we are in the all clear. If he were to be born today, he would be able to survive." She looked at him pleadingly "Please don't hate me Draco, I just couldn't put you through another miscarriage. I wanted to save you that heartache"
"Hermione, what about you? Every miscarriage has been just as hard if not harder on you." He said standing and making his way around the table to kneel in front of her. "How have you done this a lone?" They had suffered from three miscarriages, the next more painful than the last. The healers had told them after the first they weren't sure they would ever be able carry a pregnancy to term. Hermione's body had endured sever damage from the Cruciatus curse and the damage had prevented her from carrying a child for more than a few months up until now.
This of course had caused a strain on their marriage. Their desperate desire to become parents, and Draco's never ending guilt because it had been his deranged aunt who had done the damage. And he had done nothing to stop her. It had become all to much for Hermione after their last miscarriage and she had asked Draco to move out. She needed space to deal with the fact that she might never be able to have his child.
She smiled softly "I wasn't a lone. I had your father by my side this whole time." Draco looked surprised at this. His father had been telling him he was better off this entire time. Yet he cared for Hermione in her time of need.
"I don't understand,"
"Look your father has never been my biggest fan, nor I his. But you know something that your father loves is his money and his family. You are his only son and if you don't produce an heir that means his line ends with you. So this child our child is his future and he knows that."
"Have you grown on him." He asked with a small smile.
"Well he doesn't like me any less than he did." She smirked.
"It's a boy," he asked she had referred to the baby as a him. She nodded yes with a smile.
"Who else knows?" He thought about his mother and wondered if she would have been able to keep this secret from him this long. She knew how much he desired a child with Hermione his brilliant witch.
"No one, just me and your father. I hadn't planned to tell anyone, but he saw me at the hospital the day I had my first appointment. He didn't agree with me of course my decision to keep it from you until I knew if I would be able to carry him to term. He agreed to keep my secret though. And has been there every step of the way. Even sending Bindy his personal house elf too look after me."
"Oh I am sure you loved that," he laughed with humor, his parents elves we free and paid a decent wage, but Hermione still had refused to have an elf in their services.
"It wasn't so bad actually. The healer put me on bed rest almost at once. And Bindy has kept me company. Though I still haven't changed my mind about having one full time." She smiled again, it was so good to see her smile. He had missed that the most, her smile. The way just a smile from her good turn any bad day into something memorable.
"How have you kept it hidden?" He asks his eyes drifting to her stomach again.
"I am witch Draco, and a well crafted glamor charm can hide just about anything" she pulled her wand out and waved it once. When she was done he could see the small baby bump and couldn't help but beam. Hermione had never made it past the first trimester and Draco wasn't sure he would ever be able to see her glow awhile she carried their child. He placed both hand palm down to her belly. And at his touch he could feel the baby kick. His smile widen as his child nudged his hand with another kick.
"I love you," she said as happy tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I love you too Hermione," he said softly as he placed a kiss to her belly.
"Come home Draco," she said she cupped his check with her hand. "We have an nursery to put together. And your father and driving me crazy "
"I thought you would never ask," he said leaning up to catch her lips in a searing kiss.
Things were starting to look up, and Hermione had just made him the happiest man on earth again. Life was good.
Hope you enjoyed this short little story, sometimes things really do have a happy ending.
