A Mangrove Tale

Orchid is the best of them all. When I'm around her, my heart beats faster. When she holds my talon, it quivers and my scales turn pink at the mention of her name. Her voice comforts me, and I feel like I'm lying in a cloud. Is it possible that for the first time I am falling in love?

PART ONE

I AM BORN

I open my eyes,
but all I can see is the wall of my prison,
in every direction. It is dark
and cramped
inside
my prison.
I hear dragons speaking
far off in the distance.
My brain does not yet recognize
the words they speak.
Nor does it know their meanings.
But it loves their sounds,
each one different
and beautiful.
I long to escape my prison
and be with the words.
I search for an opening
in my prison,
but there is none.
Angry, I thump my tail
against the wall, and to my surprise
it cracks.
A ray of sunlight escapes through the tiny hole I have created.
I am delighted. I poke a claw
through the hole, making it larger.
I do this until
I have created a hole as large as my head.

I bust through,
and I am free.
I am in a room. A room with a door-
between me and the world
I push on it, and
it opens.

The world in front of me
is a beautiful place,
so full of color,
and the sun covers me
like a warm blanket.

I realize my scales are turning pink.
The color of love.
