He was alone. He didn't remember the events that occurred. It was all hazy, like everything that happened until then was just a dream. And finally, Shinji Ikari had awoken from his dream only to face the nightmare of life.

Even on a dark and empty street...

He collapsed on the ground in defeat, as he had done so many times before. He cursed himself for his weakness, cursed himself for still being alive. He knew that he shouldn't have survived. He didn't deserve it, he didn't even want it. He gave in to his emotions, letting loose the tears he could no longer constrain. He started when a gentle hand placed itself on his cheek, wiped away the tears, and lead his gaze to lay upon a familiar face with a not-so-familiar expression.

If we go together...

Asuka was smiling, an expression that Shinji had never seen the fellow pilot don before. "That smile," Shinji paused, his tears ceasing for the moment. "It suits you, Asuka." At these words, the girl gave in to her own emotions, bringing Shinji into a suffocating embrace.

We one day might find something...

Together they sat, for what seemed like forever, but somehow not long enough. They watched as the stars began blinking out, one by one. And when there were only two stars left, the two became one, and at once they knew their fate. They would go out together, in the blink of an eye, with no regrets.

Like the moon that floats in the darkness...
