Vaughn sat solemnly at a table in the back of the room, far from the dance floor and the long table where all the festivities were happening. Dazed and definitely not hungry, he poked at his Chinese chicken salad. For a moment he pondered the absurdity of serving spicy, flavorful Chinese food before a sugary wedding cake, but he gave up. Knowing the wedding party, he knew he'd never come up with an answer.
Vaughn never understood the way Sark worked. He never knew how Sark came out on the better side of Sloane and Irina's schemes. He never imagined Sark would sweep Sydney off her feet with his - something he never guessed - daring and yet romantic ways. He never knew what she saw in a seemingly cold-hearted murderer.
And he never saw the pure and passionate love in Sydney's eyes that she was giving to Sark, unashamed and not shy in this room full of happy people.
This room mostly full of happy people. At the moment, Vaughn couldn't remember why he'd come. "Support, you idiot," he muttered as he attempted to stab another piece of chicken that eluded capture. He glanced up at the happy couple at the front of the room. "She doesn't need your support any more Mike," he chided himself, "she doesn't even realize you're here."
Vaughn let his fork fall to the floor as he tried to suppress the happy memories he knew would stay just that. She was gone, and he would have to move on. He stood to leave and moved towards the doors quietly, not wanting to attract her attention. It took all his willpower not to look back at her one last time.
Being the gentleman that he is, Vaughn didn't turn down the "goody bag" handed to him at the door by a cheerful attendant. He walked quickly to his car, eager to leave. Once there, his curiosity overcame his desire to drive away and peered inside. Among the many small items included was a pen. A nice, dark blue pen with the words "Thank you! ~ The Sarks 2/5/2005 ~" engraved in gold.
"She's gone. She gave me a pen," he said quietly. "I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen."
