THE FROST WAND
Albus Severus Potter walked down Diagon Alley with his father Harry Potter. Today was the day he was going to get his first wand from Ollivander's and he was excited. While nervous about going to Hogwarts this Fall, he had been dreaming about owning a wand for years. Now, he was on his way to Ollivander's for his first wand! Excited he marched up to the steps of Ollivander's shop with Harry in tow. The chimes rang as the door opened. Right before going in though, Albus felt a light tugging sensation right before he entered the shop. However, due to his excitement, he quickly ignored the feeling and went into Ollivander's shop.
"Just a moment." An elderly voice called from the back and a few seconds later they heard someone shuffling towards them.
"Ah, Harry Potter." Mr. Ollivander exclaimed. "It is so good to see you again. I take it your second is ready for his own wand?" He asked as he looked at the young boy with interest.
"Yes," Harry replied. "He is. This is Albus, my second child."
"Well then! Let us begin!" With that, Ollivander measured Albus' wand arm and went to the back and brought out a wand. It was an 11 inch beech wand with a dragon heartstring core, beautifully crafted. However, when Albus held on to the wand, nothing happened. Quickly, Ollivander took the wand away and gave another to Albus to try. One by one, wands were rejected bringing some unease to Albus. Eventually, what seemed like hours, Ollivander exclaimed that this was interesting as they tried quite a few wands, even older wands that were not sold before. Even the used wands did not call for Albus. In the end, Ollivander regretfully stated that none of the wands he had chosen him.
"It seems, your wand may have been taken by another witch or wizard. This is rather curious for if a wand was chosen it would bond with one witch or wizard. If the wand does bond again with another, it would only bond with another witch or wizard once the owner is no more."
Ollivander looks up at Harry back to Albus. "I am terribly sorry about this, but it seems that the wand that was meant for him is not available for him. I do have a few more that are nearly finished which you can try a few days from now."
Harry gave a sad smile knowing how much this experience crushed Albus patting the boys head. "Thank you." Harry replied. "It looks like we may have to come back-"
At that moment, Albus rushed out from the shop, tears slowly welling up. He really wanted a wand but it looks like he would not get one at all. Ignoring his father's call, Albus ran down Diagon Alley and turned a few corners eventually finding himself lost. After calming himself down, he wiped his tears with his shirt and looked around for the first time. The alley was dark and cold, with only a few witches and wizards passing by. The cold atmosphere and the unfriendly looks of the passerby made him realize he ran into Knockturn Alley. To make matters worse, he had no idea where in Knockturn Alley he was.
"What bring you to this neighborhood?" a voice asked. When Albus turned he saw a raggedy cloaked man walking towards him.
Frightened, Albus ran away hearing footsteps quickly coming from behind. He turned around a corner and saw a door partially open inviting him inside. He slipped through the door closing it, moments before a couple of gruff voices shouting passed by. Albus leaned against the door eyes closed, panting, shivering, not sure what to do.
He slowly opened his eyes as he looked at his new surroundings. It seemed like an old clothing and accessory shop, but it seemed like no one was in it for a while. Yet despite how abandoned the place looked, he did not feel like he was alone. He looked about cautiously as he slowly he edged himself towards the center of the room.
"Hello?" Albus called out, his voice barely a whisper.
He began to feel a similar tugging sensation that seemed to want him to walk towards the back of the room. He started to carefully walk towards the direction where he was bring drawn towards.
"I hope you know it is rather rude to just sneak about in a shop like this." A feminine voice behind him spoke.
Albus, yelped. Turning around he saw a figure behind him looking at him with interest.
"Oh don't worry. It is not like you will be punished for coming in this shop, after all, my parents were the owners." the voice stated matter-of-factly. The figure drew near allowing Albus to see who was speaking to him. It was a girl, looking to be around sixteen or seventeen years of age, her skins was ghostly pale, with as she walked towards him. She looked to be wearing a school uniform which looked to be a bit rumpled. Her eyes and hair seemed to look pale in a whitish color as well. She put out her hand for Albus to shake.
"First off, welcome to the Frost Store. My name is Selene, and sorry about the dust and the mess here." She gestured at the clutter. "We are not open so please excuse of all this."
Albus took Selene's hand and shook it feeling her hand to be quite cold, but then seeing that this place was cold and dark, it was not that surprising.
"A-Albus Potter." Albus stammered.
"Pleasure." She replied, beaming at him. "So what brings you here to this shabby store, Albus?"
Albus related the tale about how he wanted to get a wand, but he was not able to get one despite going to Ollivander's and trying all the wands. He related how he found himself in Knockturn Alley and sought refuge in the store when he saw the door slightly open. He eventually felt drawn to walk towards the back of the room and before he got there met with her.
During that time, Selene nodded, listening attentively, even calling up some stools for Albus and her to sit on. At first Albus was shocked, the girl summoned the stools without mutter a word or even using a wand. He later realized she should be in her final years as a student so it would be natural for someone to know more advance magic and simply shrugged it off.
As Albus finished his story, Selene got up from her stool.
"Goodness, not even a first year and already having quite the adventure, Albus." Selene exclaimed. "Why don't we finish the adventure and see what it is that drawn you here?"
Albus nodded and got up and at her motioning to go ahead, he walked towards the back to a closed door. He tried the doorknob, which felt cold, and saw that the door was unlocked Turning the doorknob, Albus opened it cautiously.
"Don't worry." Selene assured him. "This place is not booby-trapped or anything. Feel free to take a look around."
Albus then fully opened the door and walked in. The room was dimly lit and looked to be an old abandoned office. Stacks of old documents and newspapers lay about. A few headlines caught his eyes and he noticed one had a headline dating years back, but a sudden pull of energy made him look at the source on the desk.
It was a wand. Unlike everything else in the room that had dust on it, this wand was not covered in any dust or clutter. Albus felt a power calling out to him, drawing him beckoning him to pick up this wand. As soon as his hand touched the wand, a warm sensation enveloped around him. It was a pleasant feeling particularly as the building itself was cold. As the sensation died down, he held on to the wand and looked at it closely.
It was a beautiful wand with intricate frost patterns with single glowing blue gem was affixed at the end of the wand.
"Well it seems that it finally found a new owner." Selene replied from the doorway.
Albus looked confused so she elaborated. "That wand was in need of a new owner and I do not have a need for that wand."
"But." Albus began but was cut off by Selene.
"Seriously, Albus take it. The wand called for you and is now yours."
He nodded and tucked the wand into his pocket and thanked her which she smiled in response.
"Well then," Selene said. "Best we get you back to your father then." At his nod, she gave him directions on how to get back to Diagon Alley reminding him to just head straight to his destination.
Albus nodded his head once more. Selene smiled again trying not to laugh at how polite he was being and said. "It was nice meeting you Albus. I hope you enjoy Hogwarts." With that he felt a gentle force push him and he headed out towards Diagon Alley.
As he neared the intersection, he heard a familiar voice behind him.
"So where did you go hiding, lad?" He turned and saw the same raggedy cloaked man.
Albus stood frozen as the man drew nearer.
"I would appreciate it if you did not come near my son." A familiar voice stated right behind Albus. Albus turned to see his father and flung himself at him fresh tears of joy coming down. Harry ruffled his son's hair and made sure he was alright before looking up once more. Harry noticed that the man scurried away back further into Knockturn Alley.
"Albus, what were you doing there? I have been looking all over for you." Harry stated hugging his child.
Albus hugged him back fiercely, "Sorry, Dad. I was just so upset and-"
"I understand, Albus. But you have to be careful. Knockturn Alley is not the safest place. I remember my first time there, not really a pleasant experience." Harry exclaimed.
After seeing that his son was alright, he told his son they would visit Ollivander's again in a couple of days and see if the new wands match or not.
"Um... dad?"
"Yes, Albus?"
"I do not think we need to go." Albus stated. "I have a wand now."
Albus pulled out the wand from his pocket and showed it to Harry. Harry immediately took the wand from Albus and checked the wand. Harry questioned Albus closely and decided to head to Ollivander's once more.
"Is something wrong?" Albus asked.
Harry tried to give him a reassuring smile. "No, son. I just want to make sure the wand is safe. I know you said the wand bonded with you but since it came from Knockturn Alley, I want to make sure that it is safe and not tampered with. And who else but Ollivander's to check on wands?"
Once they arrived back at the store, Harry motioned for Albus to find a place to sit as he talked to Ollivander about Albus' new wand. Ollivander took the wand with great care and began to examine it. His eyes widened.
"Is there anything wrong?" Harry asked in a low voice.
"No, no, nothing regards to curses. This wand is fine, Harry." Mr. Ollivander remarked. "No, what I am fascinated about is the wand itself. By the information you gave me and seeing this wand, this is the Frost family wand. This wand is given to the Heir or Heiress of the Frost family. While the family is not an old and noble house here, they were quite respected back in the days when they resided in Northern Europe." Ollivander inspected the wand again. "Yes, 10 inches made of willow with an ice phoenix feather core."
Harry looked at the wand with disbelief. "Ice phoenix core?"
Ollivander shrugged, "In the northern regions, there were tales of ice phoenixes flying about long ago, but mind you that was at least hundreds of years ago. Thus, having such a core is a rare thing. In fact, this may be one of the few wands left in existence with an ice phoenix core."
Harry looked at the wand with interest.
"Um, where did your son get this wand again?"
Harry turned and beckoned Albus to come over. "Albus, would you happen to know where you got this wand again?" Harry asked.
Albus nodded a little afraid that he may have been in trouble, but he bravely summoned up some courage and replied back. "I got it at the Frost Store in Knockturn Alley."
Harry and Mr. Ollivander looked at each other, a little startled.
"Em, did you find the wand there or did someone give you the wand?" Ollivander asked.
"There was a girl there who told me that I could keep the wand. She said she had no need of it anymore." Ollivander gave him a measuring look and nodded.
"Thank you for the information, Albus. It seems your wand is in perfect working order. Would you mind waiting for your father and I to finish our little conversation?"
Albus nodded seeing that he was not going to be in trouble and happily went back to his seat waiting patiently for his dad.
"But wasn't the shop burned down years ago?" Harry asked in a low voice.
Ollivander nodded. "One year after the Hogwarts Battle. Also did you notice this?" He pointed at the blue gem at the end of the wand. Harry peered at the gem which glowed slightly.
"What is it?" Harry asked.
"That is a soul gem. It is supposed to hold a soul within it. When the gem is glowing like that, that means there is a soul already inhabited in the gem."
"But who's…" Harry trailed off turned to Albus and asked. "Albus, do you remember the name of the girl who you spoke with?"
Albus nodded. "Selene, she said her parents owned the shop."
The two adults looked at one another once more wide eyed.
"But she-" Harry began, Ollivander nodded.
After a moment they both had looks of understanding, and Ollivander gave the wand back to Harry.
"Well the wand is safe, Harry. Your son can use it. I do not think the previous owner will cause any trouble. Though I must say, I am also rather surprised about that as well." Mr. Ollivander stated out loud. He quietly added, "May be best to not tell him much for now."
Harry nodded, "Thank you for checking thoroughly and making sure my sons wand is in good shape. I will stop by again when I have time."
Mr. Ollivander nodded and bid them both a great day.
Harry and Albus used the Floo back to their home where Ginny, James, and Lily were preparing dinner.
Seeing them return Ginny smiled. "So did Albus finally get his first wand?" she asked.
Harry nodded and motioned that he would tell her more about it later.
That night Albus and his siblings were tucked into their beds fast asleep while Harry sat in his study reading an old Daily Prophet about the Frost Shop fire. As the night went on, all Harry could think was what did Selene have in store for his son?
