Drabble: The Sending

Note: inspired by the rewatching of the Sending FMV on Gamespot in celebration of FFX 5th birthday.

When he saw, for the first time, a mass Sending, it wasn't the spirits, or the sunset, or even the dancing girl that captivated him. It was the expression on her face that truly captured his eyes - even as her body sang with the Hymn, staff arcing across the water.

She was beautiful, for sure, a young woman, but just barely. She was a girl forced into womanhood too early, he thought. Still too innocent, yet not innocent enough. She had seen too many deaths, too many who cried for help, and she could only watch as the suffering continues. As a Summoner, the only thing she could do was the Sending, to offer solace to those who survived that their loved ones will not come back as monsters.

And also, the Pilgrimage.

A journey that will end the suffering of the people, and can only be achieved by the Summoners – perhaps that is all she could do.

And perhaps that is all he could do as well, protect her on her Pilgrimage, so that she could stop the suffering of the people.

So he watched her as she danced on the water, watched her face, watched as she took on the sorrow of every individual standing on the wooden dock as they cried quietly into their hands. Watched as she took on the pain of all the spirits beneath her, leaving them only peace as she sends them to the Farplane. Watched as she suffered silently, face far too old for a child of seventeen years. Watched as she cried unheard and unseen, cold and alone on that spire of water.

And he thought at that moment, I will go on this journey with her. Not only to find his way home, not only so they could end the suffering on this land. He will go with her, and protect her, and he will see to it that the pain caused by Sin end.

He will go, so that the deep sorrow and suffering within her eyes could end as well.
