Voices
By: Laurel

You call me a the voice of freedom
An eagle soaring in flight
I'm known as the voice of the people
Flooding an age with light.

There are others like me in this world
Undaunted by dogma of old
Their lives consumed by a mission
And in battle dearly sold

As long as my quest is remembered
Or till freedom reigns sea to sea
Those people shall carry my standard.
The hope that resides in me.

***

Mine rings the voice of love, you say
Amidst desolation and hate
An advocate of resolve and fidelity
Though cruel and bitter my fate

But on this earth there are countless
With feelings guileless and pure
Although these passions are damned;
Wordless, forevermore

Long as people can love from a distance
Long as fond hearts refuse to still
The resounding bells from the chapel
In my name will not cease to peal.

***

I symbolize life for you
Unable to vanish or die
The voice of limitless hope
Forever touching the sky

And other children out there
Can innocent stay against odds
A smile all time on their face
Defying the very Gods.

Just as long as people can hope
Yet keep present lives in sight
The image you have of me
Can never go out like a light.

***

Our lives are written on parchment
Our stories have come to an end
Yet our voices ring out around you
Spanning the lay of the land

You sigh when the book is finished
"Where have they gone", you say
The people whose lives had a meaning
So unlike those you see everyday

Yet, care but to look around you
When all of hope seems gone
You'll see stories that strike familiar
And in those souls we live on

***

They say that a word once spoken
Is a word we can never forget
And every person you hear of
Is like one you've already met

And, just so, our stories ring out
Surrounding you, dare you look
Look closer, and you shall find
Stories like those in your book

You sigh when the book is finished
You search, but find nothing true
Look closer, and you will find
Perhaps, we live on in you.
