Disclaimer: I don't own anything, not even the lullaby.

A/M: Here is a pointless, semi-fluffy oneshot. I think it's cute but you might not.

A Distant Melody

Date: October 30th, 1981

Time: 9h42 PM

Setting: Potter Cottage, Godric's Hollow

A small figure appeared suddenly outside the gates of a small cottage, he was a traitor that nobody suspected, he watched eagerly as his friend attempted to calm his child. In the end the other man left the room in the cottage dejectedly.

"Harry won't fall asleep," James sighed defeatedly to his wife, he sat down at the kitchen table.

"Put your feet up on the table and this wand ends you." Lily Potter pivoted on her heel and pointed her wand at James threatingly.

"Yes dear." He cooed.

Lily magicked a few things to life and started out of the kitchen.

"Where do you think you're going?" James asked grabbing Lily by her waist.

"To put our son to bed." She said stating the obvious.

"And how, pray tell, do you plan on doing that?" James asked skeptically.

"I know the secret." Lily said coyly.

"Haha." Came the sarcastic reply.

James made no movement to follow his wife up the stairs so she did so, care free and happily.

"Shu-shu-shush." Lily said hoisting the fifteen-month-old baby into her arms.

The similarity between Harry and James was uncanny, especially if you looked at baby pictures of James, anyone would have guessed James was Harry and vise versa except for one difference, the eyes, they were the same shape as James' but the colour was Lily's.

She sat in the wooden rocking chair rocking gently long with an invisible beat. She sang in a small, but beautiful voice.

"Once upon a time and long ago

I heard someone singing, soft and low.

Now, when day is done and night is near

I recall this song I used to hear.

My child, my very own

Don't be afraid, you're not alone.

Sleep until the dawn

For all is well.

Long ago this song was sung to me

Now it's just a distant melody.

Somewhere from the past I used to know

Once upon a time, and long ago.

Somewhere from the past I used to know

Once upon a time and long ago."

Lily had been so absorbed in her singing that she hadn't noticed James appear in the doorway, smiling softly.

"I love you Harry." Lily said quietly to the sleeping baby, she placed him in his crib and stared down at him.

"A lullaby?" James said making Lily jump, she turned clutching her chest. "That's your big secret?" he asked skeptically.

"This comes as a surprise?" she asked him wrapping herself in his embrace.

He looked over her head. "Yes, actually it does."

"Well from now on I'll put Harry to bed." Lily said leading James out as not to disturb their sleeping child.

"Every night?" James asked with sly eyes.

"As many nights as you want to hear me sing." Lily explained.

"Every night then." James confirmed.

"Every night." Lily agreed.

He kissed the top of her head with ease and held her in the corridor outside their son's room.

But little did they know that there would be no every night from now on, little did they know that tomorrow would be the last time Lily Evans Potter would ever sing to her son again, that James Potter would ever kiss the top of his wife's head again.

Just outside the gate of the house the small figure lurked.

"They suspect nothing." A squeaky voice said to himself.

And Peter Pettigrew dissaperated quickly.

A/M: There you go, my little pointless semi-fluffy oneshot.
