Notes: Thanks to everyone for the feedback on my previous work. This short vignette sprang to mind when I was mentally reviewing the plot of one of my favorite eps.
Timeline: Follows Burnout
To Amanda King
She looked down at the certificate Billy had presented to her earlier in the day -- the calligraphed letters of her name against the parchment background, the words, government boilerplate commending her, the signature of President Regan.
For service to her country
She read it over, and over until she had it memorized.
Above and beyond the call of duty
She felt a little bit sick to her stomach, and the room began to swim just a little bit. She didn't deserve it. She was a fraud.

She had not served her country. She'd never served her country. Everything she did, every choice she made, was not driven by patriotism.
