Yugi didn't know quite where he was.
Although there was barely any light, he was aware he was in a tomb. The air tasted dusty, like it hadn't circulated for five thousand years. His grandfather and his friends, including Marik, Ishizu and Odeon stood off to his left. On his right was an altar, and at once he knew it was meant to hold the seven Millennium Items. Above this altar, a giant Eye of Wadjet stood sentinel above many confusing hieroglyphs.
Yugi was aware of this and yet he didn't know how he knew all of that. He wanted to focus on what was around him, try and find out what was happening, but his mind wouldn't cooperate. All it focused on was Yami.
Yami. Standing in front of him. Separated from him. Real. Yugi knew he was real because everyone else was watching him. That, and Yugi could actually feel Yami's hands on his shoulders. His mind knew this and yet it did not seem possible. Yami was talking and his deep tenor voice wasn't just heard in his mind anymore but was sweeping and dancing around Yugi's ears. Yami was explaining to Yugi that, even though he had to go, they would still exist in each other's hearts because of the gifts they had given each oth-
Wait…w-why is Yami leaving?
As Yugi wonders this question, this question that makes his heart stop, the Eye on the wall starts glowing white hot. Yami turns to it and says, "My name is…" but the rest of the sentence is lost as the door opens to an even brighter light. Yami's hands finally leave Yugi's shoulders as he heads into the bright light without hesitation.
As he heads through this cleansing whiteness, Yami changes before Yugi's eyes. His clothing just seems to transform from the blue coat and pants that is Yugi's school uniform to that of a pharaoh. A cape flows majestically out from him as a white robe appears where the blue clothes once were.
But Yugi still doesn't understand. Where is Yami going? What's happening? When did they defeat their final enemy? It's all happening too fast!
"Wait! Yami!" Yugi reaches out to stop his partner, his other half, but Yami disappears into the light.
"Don't go! Yami!"
"Don't go!" Yugi sat up in his bed, hand reaching out into the darkness of his room. Through the skylight, the light of the full moon was entering Yugi's bedroom. Yugi's heart pounded and his skin shone with cold sweat. He looked around, again unsure of where he was. This time, it was easy to figure out he was just in his room and he had just been having a nightmare.
"Aibou?" Yami materialized next to Yugi, wearing a blank tank top, pants and socks. "What's wrong? Are you alright?" Yami's brows were furrowed in concern and worry shone in his violet eyes.
Yugi looked at the spirit; this boy who was the same age as him and yet wasn't; this boy who had once been a pharaoh; this boy who was his partner, his friend, his world, his other half. Suddenly Yugi knew that what he had seen hadn't just been a dream. He knew, with sickening certainty, that what he had dreamed would come to pass.
And Yugi's heart plunged into despair.
"Yami…" was all Yugi uttered before he started sobbing, reaching for his other half.
Yami's eyes widened in surprise, but he opened his arms to his partner readily. He didn't know what had upset him so. Yami scanned the room and didn't sense any danger. He whispered quiet assurances to Yugi, but he didn't seem able to calm down. For a while Yami rocked this fragile being in his arms and rubbed his back until the tears turned to dry sobs and eventually Yugi began to tire. Finally, the boy fell asleep in the pharaoh's arms.
Before he drifted off he murmured, "Please don't go. Don't leave me. Yami…"
Yami frowned as he brushed away the bangs on Yugi's forehead. My poor Aibou, Yami thought as he brushed his lips feather light to Yugi's temple.
How can the gods expect me to leave this boy?
