Listening

A/N: Got inspired when watching Ghost tonight. Dedicated to my limey love, Krystal.

When I first met you, it was already evident to me that someone had a chokehold on your heart. I didn't know who, and I didn't know why you couldn't move on, but I wanted so badly to bust down the wall you had built. You were so determined to be protected that you became stoic, almost completely void of emotion.
I tried so desperately to get you to listen to what you needed to hear. I wanted to hold your hand, intertwine our fingers, and tell you that I would never hurt you – that love would not hurt you – if you would only give me the chance. I wouldn't hurt you like your past so obviously did. I would be your wall. I would protect you, if you would only let you in. All that you needed to do was listen to me.
But when she walked through the door – my door – I learned the truth. The flash of blonde hair was new to me, but it was obvious you knew this woman. Elliot did too, but you knew her intimately. I saw it in those deep brown eyes, and they were finally shining with emotion I so longed to have directed at me. I saw love in those eyes. In her eyes, however, she looked distracted, and she didn't match your feelings for her. And then I understood, she was the one that had hurt you. You were so thrilled to see her, but I could tell that she was not ready to accept you back. She had changed from Witness Protection, and although you still loved her, she didn't love you anymore. I loved you. It didn't matter whether she was here or not. I loved you nonetheless.
I love you, Olivia Benson.
Are you listening now?
