"Hey Albus, look at this!"
Albus' eyes got bigger and bigger as he watched his older brother wave his wand and cast an Engorgement Charm at what had been a rather ordinary garden toad.
"James… are you sure you're allowed to do that? You're not just doing it 'cuz Mum and Dad are gone?" he asked, standing a few feet away with a worried expression on his face.
"Sure! I'm really good at this charm! And besides, the bigger this toad is, the more bugs he can keep from eating Mum's flowers."
"Whatever you say…" Albus replied, heading back into the house, his brow furrowed. "Just don't come crying to me when you're grounded."
James waved his brother's objections off with a grin and another charm, thereby enlarging the hapless toad to a size rivaling that of a large chicken.
"James! What are you doing?" Lily Potter called, coming out of the broom shed. James jumped, and nearly dropped his wand. He put his hands behind his back in an attempt to conceal his endeavors, but it was too late.
"JAMES SIRIUS POTTER! WHAT did you do to that poor toad!?"
"Erm… Hi, Lily."
Hands on her hips, Lily bore down upon her older brother like some small, redheaded harpy. "You know you're not supposed to be using magic outside of school!"
"What? I'm not using magic!" said James, his most innocent expression on his face. "Sister dear, why ever would you think that?"
Eloquently, Lily raised one eyebrow, and pointed to the toad.
"Huh? Fredegar? What about him?"
"You know very well, you berk!"
"No. What's wrong with him?"
"You've been using Engorgement Charms on that poor toad!"
"What? No! I have not! You know we're not allowed to do magic outside of school."
"That's what I just said!" Lily shrieked. "And don't lie, I saw you!"
"Saw me what?"
"Using an Engorgement Charm! I'm going to tell Mum and Dad when they get home!"
Scowling now, James pulled a stuffed rabbit from behind his back. "No you're not, because if you do, Fluffy gets it!"
"You GIT!"
James laughed and tauntingly held the rabbit just out of her reach as the toad began a futile bid for safety. Suddenly, there was a blinding flash of light, and a great wind rushed through the Potter's backyard. James was knocked backward into his mother's prized Burning Sunflower, losing his grip on both the rabbit and his wand in the process. It was an extremely hot and dry summer day, and the waterless soil easily lifted into the air and did not quickly settle. It was several minutes before it even cleared enough that James could see to do more than roll off the heat of the Burning Sunflower. He blinked rapidly to clear his eyes and made out a darker blob that was likely Lily.
"Meteolojinx Recanto." Ginevra Potter's voice cut through the air as smoothly as her body once had on a broom. The spell dissipated the debris in the air, revealing Lily, holding tightly on to Fluffy, her eyes as big as saucers, with the toad now returned to normal size sitting at her feet, and Albus, standing warily behind his mother, father, and grandparents.
"You have a good bit of explaining to do, young man." Said Molly Weasley.
James glanced from his siblings, to his parents, to his grandparents, and smiled weakly. "Hi?"
It was later said that during her time. Lily Potter was one of the few people at Hogwarts with a pet toad.
