A/N TS is top secret, and to the few that saw this before, yes, I revised it. I haven't ever done OCs before, but the story rather demanded it, seeing that it's set about 25 years before FF7 proper. I don't know Before Crisis, but I do know Crisis Core, DoC and Advent. Crisis Core makes my timeline building head hurt.

Square-enix owns all, I make no money from it.

Dia stared incredulously at the immaculate man seated across from her, a rash of anger heating up her face. Her brain felt like a dragon had stomped on it, splattering thoughts and feelings and her normal tight control all over the quiet office. Accusations, questions, and refusals all scrabbled for control of her stunned vocal chords, a traffic jam of incoherency.

Kaul, maddeningly professional sociopath that he was, completely ignored her rather obvious distress, instead taking out a single sheet of paper and sliding it toward them as if he had just handed out the most ordinary orders in the world. Her partner Troy leaned forward to take it, which was good, because if she moved, someone was like to get hurt.

And the traffic jam broke.

"Who the hell thought this was a good idea? I'll wring his scrawny neck – anyone stupid enough to assign the Turks to raise a baby is a criminally incompetent detriment to this company." She glared bullets at Kaul. "There are nannies for this shit. I am not a fucking housewife!"

Kaul smiled tightly, one of his few real ones, and not exactly reassuring; his sense of humor was a bit twisted. "The President."

Troy made a noise beside her, like the wind had been knocked out of him. Dia blinked in shock. President Shin-ra did not give orders, he gave general directives. She numbly crossed off 'stupidity' on her mental list of explanations.

"Why?" Troy, the master of pertinent questions.

"All information on the child is rated TS six, need to know. I don't need to know." That answered about three-fourths of the question all by itself. "President Shin-ra requested two Turks, one male and one female, to serve as surrogate parents to a child. Troy was specifically named." Dia glanced over at Troy, who looked thoughtful, but didn't seem inclined to say anything. Recitation over, Kaul looked directly at her, lips pressed in a thin line. "I know that this is not something you would enjoy, but this assignment requires two people who can work well together, and you are Troy's partner." Dia nodded reluctantly. She understood that part well enough; she wouldn't abandon Troy, even if the assignment was ridiculous.

"Dr. Hojo's office is on the sheet. He has the baby, and hopefully more information than I do." Kaul turned back to his monitors, dismissal implicit in his words.

As they walked out the door, Troy muttered, "That greasy git, with a baby? Maybe we are doing the kid a favor."

Dia smiled despite herself.
