You don't mean that

Official Disclaimer
The characters of Steve McGarrett, Chin Ho Kelly, Kono Kalakaua, Adam 'Toast' Charles, Doris McGarrett, Joe White and anyone else within the story who might sound familiar do not belong to me in any shape or form, I am merely using them for my own entertainment purposes.
The character of Danni Williams could probably be considered mine by now. Although the character was originally based on male Danny Williams I think it's probably to say that she is now her own individual character. She has her own story and her own individual background now, a background and story which is different from male Danny's story. This also means that Grace is different as well since not only does she live full time with her mother but also because Danni and Duncan have a fairly civil relationship with each other. Grace's surname is also Taylor in this saga as Williams is Danni's maiden name while Taylor was her married name.
The characters of Special Agent Jack O'Connor and Riley King do belong to me though.
I should also add that if a character is mentioned who you don't recognise from the show then they probably belong to me as well.
Author Note
Here's a new offering for you all.
This story will begin as angst filled but there should be a happy ending as long as Steve and Danni play ball with me… if not… well it may be an angsty story.
I should also add this this story would definitely be considered an AU because it set in season three, though with my own characters, and Steve and Danni aren't a couple in it yet… I think it safe to say that in the real main saga they would be together by now.
All I'll say is that there are reasons behind the way Steve is in this chapter…
There should be about… seven chapters to this story I think so please look for it. Look out for my other stories as well because I'm hoping to do some updating over the next three days since I'm off from work.
Anyway please enjoy

Other, other note
There are plenty of other McDanni stories exploring different saga and different ways of how things happened. If you're interest in any of them then please check them out. I'm regularly updating so you shouldn't be waiting too long
Chapter One
I do
"Danni, thank god you're here"
Danni Williams glanced up as she stepped through the doorways which led into the Five-O headquarters, her eyebrow quirking up as her gaze landed on Kono Kalakaua who appeared to be pacing in front of the doors like a woman possessed, a look on her face which made Danni's smile slide from her face.
"Kono? What is it? Has something happened? Is everyone okay?" Danni demanded, firing out her questions rapidly as she reached out and gripped Kono's elbow.
"Everyone is okay at the moment" Kono replied cryptically. "But I don't think they will be for much longer."
"Why do you say that?" Dannie asked, resisting the urge to shake the younger woman. "And straight answers this time Kono, I don't have time to puzzle things out if something is happening."
"Right sorry" Kono said with a shake of her head. Danni watched as the other woman visibly pulled herself together and met Danni's anxious gaze.
"Doris and Joe White are in the boss's office and they've been in there for a good fifteen minutes so far and the Boss SEAL face has been in place for at least thirteen minutes of that. We both know that Doris and Joe White never come just to say hi" Kono stated, her teeth gnawing at her lower lip. Out in the field Kono was always cool under pressure but give her a problem which involved someone who she considered as family and her nerves showed through, reminding Danni with a vengeance that however good Kono was at her job, she was still a relative Rookie to it.
"Where is everybody?" Danni questioned.
"Jack and Toast are at the database trying to see if they can find out anything which might be happening which would interest Doris and White. Chin is in his office feeding back information to us because his office is the only office other than yours which has a clear view of the Boss's. I've been waiting for you to come in because you're the only one who the Boss won't tear a new one off of for interrupting. I wanted to fill you in" Kono answered, glancing over her shoulder towards the main room.
"And the others who aren't here?" Danni pressed.
"They're out working the Warehouse case. Chin is ready to call them in if need be. If you had been much later then we were going to call Riley to get him down here. What do you want us to do?"
Danni closed her eyes for a brief second, ignoring the feeling of unease which was causing her stomach to churn before she spoke.
"Call Riley in and carry on with what you're doing. I'll speak to Steve once his guest have departed and see what is happening" She said with a nod to Kono before she moved passed her and headed over to her office which was next to her partner's Steve McGarrett's office. She glanced towards it, her eyes landing on Steve and breathed out nosily, her anxiety rocketing. She had seen Steve look like that once before and the aftermath had not been pleasant for anyone.
She opened the door to her office and moved to the desk, dropping her bag beneath it. What she wanted to do was to rush into Steve's office and throw Doris and Joe White out but she knew that would be the worst thing to do. Steve's relationship with his mother and the man who had kept an eye on him while he had been in active service was complicated.
If she interrupted now then she would be more likely to set Steve off and that was the last thing she wanted. However difficult it was she would have to sit and wait it out until he came to her.
Danni sat in her seat, allowing herself one more glance towards Steve's office, her heart skipping a beat when he realised that he was watching her through the glass. Their eyes met for a moment before Steve looked away and focused back on his mother who was clearly still talking to him.
She ignored the feeling the simple look had evoked and powered up her computer, logging in and grabbing the first file on the pile of her desk, opening it up to the first page. Only years of experience of being a cop allowed her to focus on her task at hand rather than focusing on Steve and what was happening in his office.
Danni wasn't sure how much time passed when she looked up to realise that Steve was standing in front of her office door, his arms crossed over his chest as he stared at her, a look in his eyes that she had never seen before and one which placed her immediately on guard. Something bad had clearly happened within his office. The question was what?
"Hey Steve" She said softly, watching him carefully afraid to make any sudden movement in case it set him off. He remained quiet, moving into the room and taking the seat in front of her desk. "Is everything okay?" She tried again when the silence continued.
Steve glanced away from her for a moment, his face fixed in his SEAL mask still before he looked back at her and spoke flatly.
"I'm going away for three weeks, I need you to be in charge here Danielle during my absence" He told her. Danni's eyebrows flew up in surprise, not just at the news but also at the fact he had called her Danielle, something which he rarely did. If she had been anxious before then it was nothing to how she felt now.
"I see" She said calmly, hiding behind her own mask. "Where are you going?"
"It's classified" He responded.
"So it's Navy business then" She guessed, her eyes narrowing slightly when his eyes flickered away from her for a second before focusing back on her. It was such a simply gesture but Danni had taught herself to be able to read her partner and she knew that whatever was going on it wasn't going to be as simple as that. "So not Navy business then which means it's solely Doris business. I'm guessing that's why she and Commander White were in your office just now. They need your help with something?"
"I'll be gone three weeks" He repeated, his hands gripping the arms of the chair tight enough that his knuckles turned white beneath the pressure.
"Does the Governor know that you're leaving again?" She asked, her heart sinking when he shook his head.
"I need you to tell him for me" Steve told her, still in the same flat tone which she didn't recognise.
"Me?" She repeated, shock flavouring her voice. "But you're right here and…" her voice trailed off as her heart sank further. "And you're going right now. They're waiting for you outside now aren't they." She ended, making her last sentence a statement rather than a question. She swallowed hard when his eyebrow quirked slightly telling her she had guessed correctly. "Will you be on the island at least?" She questioned, reaching up and pinching the bridge of her nose when he remained silent again his eyes flickering away again. "No then. So you're going on a mission which you probably know nothing about other than the extreme basic, to somewhere away from here with no back up. No Steve" She said with a shake of her head, her emotions spilling out "Just no, you can't keep doing this, you see that right? You can't keep running every time she clicks her fingers. She probably hasn't even gone through the official channels. Don't do this"
"It's my job Danielle." He told her, pushing himself to his feet. "I'll be in a communication blackout so you won't be able to contact me. I'll see you when I return" He nodded at her before he turned and left the room. The action breaking Danni, as anger swept over her, breaking past the iron control which she was famous for.
"It is not your job" Danni retorted coming to her own feet and hurrying after him, ignoring the way the others turned to look at them with wide eyes. "Your job is to be here in Hawaii, with us working cases. Your job is not to run after your mother, doing God only knows what because she demands it of you."
"My job is to go wherever my country needs me to" Steve told her as he turned to face her, a dark look on his face which normally would have her backing away from the situation, though this time she continued, needing to drum her points home to him.
"Really? So she showed you a letter or a written order from an official of higher rank than her in her organisation telling you that your country requires your skills? An official summon or something?" She asked, her eyes narrowing when she saw him frown. "So she didn't, she's just come in, weaved a story and that's all you need. Who is your backup? What teams will you be working with? What Intel have they gathered? Did you even ask her these questions? Questions which need to be asked or are you just doing a Steve McGarrett and running off into danger without a thought to anyone else. "
"What do you want from me Danni" Steve demanded angrily.
"I want you to think Steve, to use your brain and see that there is something wrong with this scenario. I want you to realise that you're no longer a lone wolf. If Doris needs you then why can't the rest of the team come with you? You have a good team? We've proven it time and time again both here and out in the field so why do you always have to do this alone? If you can't take all of us then at least take me and Riley with you. You just can't keep doing this and I'm not going to let you keep doing it. I'm going with you this time and that is that." She said.
Steve stared at her for a moment, emotions crossing his eyes too quickly for her to catch them before his expression hardened.
"The simple truth is Danielle that you'd only get in my way if I brought you with me" He told her bluntly.
"I'd get in your way?" Danni repeated, ignoring the stab of hurt his words caused her.
"You're a good Detective but that's it. Your gun technique is adequate at best and your hand to hand is… well…" his voice trailed off for a moment before he shrugged. "The truth of the matter is that I don't need you Danielle. The only thing I need from you is to stay here and do your job as my second in command."
"You think I'm only Adequate?" She said.
"You're a hindrance to me and I don't need to waste time having to protect you as usual. You're my work partner Danni, I don't answer to you, you answer to me and that's the simple truth. If you don't like the way things are done here then leave. I can find someone to replace you in a heartbeat" He told her cruelly. "If you stay then run my team like I expect you to."
"You don't mean that" Danni said, her hand curling into a fist when he met her gaze and nodded at her.
"I do" He replied clearly before he turned and headed out of the door leaving a heavy silence behind him.
