"Darien!" I halted and turned around. At a fair full of fun things to play with, a pleading call like that could mean only one thing.
"I want this!" Bunny's eyes sparkled. I swear that girl can produce glitter at will.
"The kaleidoscope is calling us, 'Buy me, Buy me!' " Rini chimed, her voice sugary and persuasive.
I gave in. What was the point? They'd never give it up. Besides, they seemed to really like the--the--why can't they hold it still so I can see what I'm buying??
I turned to the clerk. "How much?" I asked, pulling out my wallet.
Smugly, pleased with another successful sale, the clerk answered, "$10 for two."
Simultaneously, Bunny and Rini exclaimed thier joy. "Yaaay!"
I turned to Bunny. "What IS it?"
"It's a glass kaleidoscope! It's beautiful!" She was, as usual, bubbly with happiness.
Rini turned hers over in her hands. "Thank you, Darien! I'll treasure it!"
I hope they last more than a day, I thought. But glass? In Rini's and Bun's care? Nah--I give it six hours, max...Oh well. At least they were cheap, sorta.
Bunny called out to no one in particular.
"Darien got us matching kaleidoscopes! I'm SO happy!!"
And she was. Hopping from one foot to the other, her simple joy was contagious. Rini, meanwhile, was demonstrating to Diana how to use a kaleidoscope. Holding it excitedly up to the kitten's eye, she explained,
"Look, Diana! It changes!"
Looking at the pair of them, playing with thier new toys, I couldn't help but smile slowly. Even if the new acquisitions turned boring in an hour, or were broken, I think it was worth ten dollars to make my girls happy. This is one of the more fun moments of being the provider of our little family.
