Honey hair fell about golden, dreamy eyes. Any man with sense would lose his heart to the siren staring out longingly to sea. Some had. But Elizabeth Swann, daughter to Weatherby Swann, Governor of Jamaica would have paid about as much mind to such an occurrence as she would a gull flying pass.
Or so she insisted on telling herself.
She had a heart for the precious aqua depths and the precious aqua depths alone. She did not love the man with warm brown eyes and deep brown hair. She didn't love his muscles or his attitude or his rich laughter. She didn't love him… couldn't love him. To love him would be dangerous, like her love for the sea. It accepted the love but couldn't return it. Besides, who ever heard of someone married to the sea?
Pirates are… in a way.
Elizabeth closed her eyes desperately against that thought. That was exactly why she couldn't love a certain man.
But you love pirates… don't you Elizabeth? You love their lifestyle, stories and charm… you love their freedom.
It was useless trying to hide from that voice, the part of her that yearned for everything she couldn't have. The part of her that belonged to her mother.
Her eyes snapped open again, and with a thrill of panic she realized she might have missed them. But to her relief she saw no shadowy shapes, no glittery silver beneath the ever rolling waves.
But her heart did a strange sort of flip-flop when a masculine voice interrupted her thoughts, "Good morning, Miss Swann, isn't it a might early for you to be up and about?"
Her eyes met his and for a single second she thought that he had come to take her away on his wonderful pirate ship and sail the seven seas with her. But he didn't and she was neither relieved nor disappointed.
"No… I just like to watch the sunrise… the waves and" her cheeks turned a modest pink and her voice lowered, as if she was telling him a great secret, "I'd like to see some dolphins. I've never seen dolphins before, not even during the crossing!"
He shifted his gaze to the sea and his entire profile softened, his eyes growing a similar dreamy light about them.
"Dolphins are highly intelligent animals, you know?" He informed her, a slightly crooked grin that lit his eyes resting on his face.
"My mother said that they were sailors and pirates lost to the sea come back. And that if you saw one just as the sun rose some kind of magic would happen… or some such nonsense…" she continued as her cheeks heated once more.
"I don't think that is nonsense at all," the man standing next to her retorted, "and I happen to know of a cove that they often visit."
Immediately Elizabeth's heart swelled at the thought she might catch a glimpse of such magical creatures.
"Really?" she whispered.
"I'll show you if it pleases you so much," he offered.
She clasped the weathered hand he offered her as he led her along the shore. Not once did she fear for her safety, if he believed her mother like she, how much harm could he really be?
The sky was only beginning to stain as they reached his spot, and all brown orbs searched frantically for the blessed animals.
Just as the sun broke over the horizon, turning the sea to liquid gold, two dolphins leapt in a majestic arc, their silhouettes nearly black as they traveled their path.
Never before had Elizabeth felt such joy, her hand still held by the man standing beside her.
