This was the end. As I saw the pool of crimson getting larger I knew it was feeding from me, that the source was the gash across my neck. I knew that if I wanted any chance at living I should put pressure on it but I couldn't seem to move. I just lay there watching my blood stain the snow, turning the pure white landscape into a sea of crimson. As the world started to dim and my thoughts slowed down the snow seemed to get warmer and I stop shivering not even realizing I had started. My last concise thought was at least I was truly dying in the beautiful Russian country side, the land where my dear Dimitri had family that he could go to for comfort. As I reached oblivion I started reliving the events that had led up to death.

It all started with me and my shadow sister Vasilisa. Lisa is a royal moroi and she has spirit magic, this means she can heal others. I am her shadow sister and her guardian against the forces of evil in her head and in the outside world. A shadow sister is someone that has crossed into the world of shadows and was allowed to return. In other words, I died before my time so Lisa was able to bring me back. We have been best friends since we met at 's, a boarding school for mori and their guardians. The accident still haunts us both; we were at Lissa's house for break. My parents have been noticeable absent in my life since they had sent me off to boarding school. The last I heard my mother was on a mission deep under cover and top secret and no one has seen my dad in a while, heck I didn't even know who he was.

Lisa's parents had been very kind and asked me if I wanted to spent holiday break with them. I had accepted, tired of spending my break at school for so many years. We had been snuggled up in bed for a while when my acute senses picked up the smells of smoke. I thought that it was just the neighbor burning something but as the temperature in the room started to go up I knew something was very wrong. I woke up and saw smoke starting to enter the hallway outside. I woke Lisa up, my training kicking in; I had to get her out at all costs. I just had to hope that her parents' guardians got them out. I dragged Lisa down the hall away from the smoke. She didn't have a window in her room so I was going to take her out the patio door. What I hadn't realized was that the fire was started on the second floor so the ceiling was collapsing. As we reached the door the beams holding up the ceiling groaned. I knew we didn't have much time so I took the paper weight from the kitchen table as we passed by and through it at the glass door.

The glass shattered into millions of tiny fragments, spraying me with shards as I had moved in front of Lisa to protect her from the glass. This only took a few seconds but it was enough time for the ceiling to give way and for burning timbers to come raining down on us. In that split second I had grabbed Lisa by the arm and swung her around, forcing her to stumble forward hopefully getting her out of the house and into the safety of the backyard. The last thing I thought I would see then was her looking back at me with true fear in her eyes, a true deer in head lights expression if I ever saw one.
